Do you live in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol or Cardiff? Would you be willing to host a refugee in your home?
Refugees at Home is a small charity who help refugees and asylum seekers avoid homelessness and destitution during the long, difficult UK asylum process. Their generous hosts offer a bed and a chance for the guests to catch their breath ready for their next step in building a new life here in the UK.
As the legal and social climate towards refugees grows more hostile, you are needed more than ever before, and Refugees at Home desperately need more hosts. They really need hosts in or in commuting distance of a city of town, who will give a man a room for a month or more - current need hotspots are South/East London, Cardiff, Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham, but this can change quickly! Most guests are men, as they are more likely to be assessed as ‘not priority need’- but they are very vulnerable on the streets, and a host placement helps with integration and language skills, as well as being very rewarding for the host. It’s no exaggeration to say hosting really does transform lives.
All hosts are checked by home visitors- volunteer social workers, GPs, community mental health practitioners and the like- who both protect guests and support hosts. Home visitors are also needed, so if you have a professional background in home assessment Refugees at Home would love to hear from you.
There is a load more information on their website, www.refugeesathome.org where you can register to be a host or a home visitor or ask one of their volunteers questions.
