I Am Multicultural PODCAST  LISTEN to Inspirational Stories of ❤️ about the Multicultural Experience For wedding photos 👉🏾@petronellaphotography

“My siblings and I were the rich black kids, which made it hard because we didn't really fit in with the other black kids in our school. They would say to us that we were not a part of the group. We had a lot of white friends growing up, we were thought that we weren't pretty and straightened our hair to fit in with these white kids.
.
I remember in the middle school I was feeling so alone sometimes because I didn't feel like there were other people like me. While growing up I had my sisters, but I didn't have a whole group of people that knew how you were supposed to take care of curly hair and things like that.
.
A lot of it has to do with marketing and media. Nowadays it's amazing because you see everyone with curly hair and brown skin, but when we were growing up there was none of that. All my little kids catalogs were mostly white girls with big hair and you just couldn't see yourself reflected in that.
.
When I'm looking at brands for my own kids, if I see diversity in their little models I'm automatically on their side. We were looking for a new dress for my daughter Evelyn, and I was showing her the pictures of different dresses, and she said: ‘Oh mama, that girl looks like me,’ and I started to cry because I never had that growing up. That is what it's all about – being able to see yourself represented in clothing or something else.”

“Before I used to think that you should let the small things go, but I remember reading an article about how it's important (even if it's something small), to talk to your partner about it and not just let the little things go because sometimes you can let a lot of little things go and once you have an argument, you just bring up all those times, you let these little things go, but they’re still in the back of your mind.
.
So I think it's important to not to argue over little issues but to just tell your partner, hey, you know, this thing bothered me a little bit. It kind of made me feel a certain way and then talk it out, instead of holding things in or letting things go when you're not really letting it go. So I think communication and trust are very important.

Yanshu: “At first (in the early days of the business), when I was driving to work (I would only have Monday off and I would leave the house on a Tuesday), I felt so down because I didn't have enough time to spend with my husband & our dog, so I decided I don't want to sacrifice our relationship or our happiness just to make money. I decided to take 2 days off, Monday & Tuesday, from work so that we could have more time together.
.
Now we have more time to talk. I feel like we communicate more now versus before when we knew how each other's day was. It's definitely challenging, but it's not something that we can't overcome.
.
Mike: I'm just trying to be as supportive as I can & I knew it was going to be difficult, but we find ways to make it work. I love hearing her stories at the end of the day.”

“Sense of humor is so important in marriage. Life throws all kinds of things at you, and if you don't have a sense of humor to just laugh at it or just make lemonade with lemons, then you can't get past all the obstacles and issues in life.
.
You have to learn how to deal with society’s reactions and not let that get under your skin. I know in different places of the world or this country you'll have different reactions. Some places might be less forgiving or welcome, but you can't let that ruin your relationship.”

.
A person will be walking down the street and we pass them. They stop what they're doing just to process it in their head. They turn around or just watch, and are like, ‘Wait, am I really seeing that? Is this real?’

I had a good conversation with my close friend about cultivating interracial friendships.
.
White privilege or privilege in general means you don’t actively seek out the experiences of others around you. You live in a world where you can ignore the experiences of others.
.
Next, if you are in the majority racial group, you can ignore the fact that there are discomforts and experiences and pains that other people have because it’s not your experience and that’s what privilege is.
.
The things that we think of as offensive and inappropriate questions, when asked in a genuine sense of inquisitiveness and an openness to learn aren’t offensive. People are happy to talk with you and dig deeper, share their experiences and their culture as long as they feel like you’ve created a safe space.
.
If you are truly open and inquisitive, people want you to hear their experience. They want you to be able to appreciate their culture and where they come from.”
.

“Am I not open to people who think differently than me? That’s the question I would ask people who would look at the last 10 people { they talked/texted } on their cell phone, & if they all look like you or grew up like you, maybe the question is: ‘Am I not open to thoughts that are different than my own?’
.
You can’t go out and point at someone out and say: ‘You look different than me, let’s be friends.’ That’s not authentic, and that’s not socially acceptable.
.
Expose yourself to movies that come from a different culture than you are, read articles about what’s going on in the world, in different countries around the world, what’s happening in different subcultures and what’s the racial experience of others who might be living down the street from you, but aren’t you.
.
Just be aware of what’s going on in the world around you. First off, it makes you a more educated, conscientious person when you get to the point where you’re in a place to create an organic relationship with someone who’s different than you, if you have a starting point and a cultural awareness of what’s going on around you.”

“Talk with your kids, have that open conversation and try to find anything in your community that helps them relate and feel like: ‘Oh, this is fun, this is cool. I'm a little
different, and that's a good thing.’
.
If you speak badly about other people, your kids pick up on that. Just be mindful of what you’re saying and how you’re saying it. When you make it a bad thing, then your kids make it a bad thing, so just be careful of what your reaction is to multicultural things, people and experiences. When you’re open to it, then you can raise kids who are open to that as well.”
