It's time for my final post in the Takeover of @bwphotomag , and I thought you might like to see a selection from my recent "Fading From View" series.

The portraits are of endangered Big Cats, and the idea behind the series is for us to imagine the last animal of a species walking away from us into a forest or open plain, eventually literally fading from view, into extinction, and as if these images were some of the last ever photographs taken of that species.

The series was in part influenced by rare photographs of extinct animals such as the Quagga - a subspecies of zebra that lived in South Africa until the late 1880s, where it was hunted to extinction - and the thought that one day we might see the same happen for animals we're all familiar with, such as the African Lion or Sumatran Tiger.

The Big Cats featured here are, left to right: African Lion, Puma, Eurasian Lynx, White Bengal Tiger, Sumatran Tiger and Snow Leopard.

A very big thanks to B+W Photography Magazine for inviting me to take over their Instagram feed, and to you the readers for your interest in my photography.

And best of luck to those submitting to #bpoty2018 !

Goodnight - Paul

A precursor to the Botanic and Chroma (colour) series, the Petalum studies took about 18 months to complete and resulted in over 30 images. And the template for this entire series was one image: the first one shown here, Pink Tulip Study IV.

One summer morning, in the very early days of my working on floral studies, I noticed a tiny pink tulip in its flower pot by our kitchen door and thought it would be a good subject to practice on. With it still in its pot, I spent many many hours photographing the flower, using different lighting techniques and equipment.

I'm glad I persisted, as a framed print of the image of that tiny tulip, which had been sitting quietly in our garden, went on to be exhibited at the RA Summer Exhibition in 2011! And the image, in turn, went on to be an inspiration for my other floral series.

It goes to show that sometimes the subject for a new image or even an entire series can be right under your nose; hidden in an ordinary, everyday place... @paulcoghlin @westongalleryofficial @printroom_ #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephotographymag #botanical #flowers #floral #bpoty2018 #bnwcompetition #photography #fineart #paulcoghlin #art #monochrome #minimalism #minimalist #tulip #poppy #chives #interiordesign #print #royalacademyofarts #petals #summer #garden

Many of the flowers featured in the new "Botanic" series were grown in our back garden in Eastern England, giving me a good selection of blooms for the series. My particular favourites are the Madonna Tulips, which, despite being large, still have a natural elegance and delicacy.

A number of images from the Behind The Eyes series have been popular with children. In particular "Inquisitive Fawn" and the long-necked "Giraffe 6"! @paulcoghlin @westongalleryofficial @printroom_ #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephotographymag #blackandwhitewildlife #bpoty2018 #blackandwhitewildlifephotography #bnwcompetition #photography #fineart #wildlife #fawn #giraffe #deer #paulcoghlin #art #family

Abstracts are always interesting to compose and photograph, and often highlight the dynamic behaviour of light on and around an object. A small change in the quality or direction of the light source can have quite a large impact on the composition and even effect the final mood of the piece.

After the fauna of the previous post, here are some floral studies - taken from the soon-to-be released "Botanic" series.

I'm always interested in shape and form, and in this series I took a minimalist approach, by reducing the composition down to its basic elements and going with the naturally flowing lines of each flower. I also specifically used a gentle warm monochrome tone, as full colour would have been distracting; it's a compositional approach where the use of black and white is an essential component.

Thank you B+W Photography Magazine for inviting me to takeover bwphotomag for the weekend.

I hope you enjoy my images.

Starting with the four portraits taken from my Behind The Eyes series, for which I received the 2010 BPOTY. Since then, the series has continued to expand, with "Lion's Stare" definitely the Poster Boy for the series!
