Bring out your worst so that you can see your best 🌪

Close to this year’s best look here (not to everyone’s taste I’m sure 🤷🏼‍♂️) but getting there wasn’t easy. And I guess that is the bottom line with prepping for show, or even a holiday for some people.
_
It all comes down to how bad you want it, how long you can stick it out, and the places you can take yourself when no one else is there to cheer you on 😶
_
Driving yourself into the ground in search of your best form will, in most cases, have a negative impact on your personality for that period of time, and that’s the point of this post. When you’re struggling, remember that this is all a choice that YOU made. Be self aware, and check yourself if you feel your patience diminishing quickly with the people you love (and are just as crazy as you for sticking around 🌚). _
Finally, when you’re NOT dieting... hopefully not over Christmas... make sure you make up for lost time. Spoil those people that support you, and hopefully they’ll stick around to celebrate the wins and commiserate the losses 🙌🏼💆🏼‍♂️

Back in the purple room for my weekly convict photo 🌚
_
Been focusing on the chest for a minute now and it’s finally starting looking more mature.. especially with a fat pump 💥
_
First movement on chest day at the moment is the incline smith press which fully allows me to concentrate on the muscle I’m trying to stimulate, and not worry about losing balance or dropping the weight on my face 🤦🏽‍♂️
_
I think historically, assisted movements such as smith presses and machines have been seen as inferior to free weight and free bar movements.. but more and more nowadays we’re seeing them move to the front of sessions.
_
Know your exercises, and know their purpose. Or ask your coach to do it for you 💆🏼‍♂️

Drop me a DM or email to discuss your approach to living better in 2019 🌪

A couple of shots from today’s check in 🤳🏼
_
107.5kg/234lbs this morning, which means I’m closing in on my heaviest ever weight, and about 13kg above stage weight. Keeping it as transparent as possible for you.
_
I’m far from happy with my current look but I think that’s normal given that I was over the moon with my look in the summer. I can at least see some positives in this physique though. The waist is still tight at this weight and I THINK the rear shot is looking more mature and complete. 🙌🏼
_
Almost 2019. Almost time 🌪

Start thinking about making a change in 2019 now.
_
I've spent the last 7 years building muscle, losing fat, competing, and helping others to do the same so that they can look better, feel happier, and learn how to build and maintain a physique they're happy with.
_
Whether your goal is to gain muscle, lose fat, get stronger or step on stage, brightman fitness will get you there. All that is required from you is commitment and honesty.
_
The fitness industry continues to be plagued with false promises, fake claims and misleading transformations (mostly from z-listers from Love Island on commission). My aim is to coach and educate people on how to do it properly and efficiently so that no time or money is wasted.

As you can see, the main focus of this off season so far has been making solid gains in the hair department 👩🏽
_
The feedback from the judges last year was mostly about my barnet, they said if it was a bit longer I would’ve looked like Thor and they would not have given me a pro card but also sent me straight to the Olympia where I would become the first British men’s physique Mr Olympia. So you know what I’m about. Plan and execute. 🙃
_
In more seriousness this photo is v relevant tonight. Tomorrow at 7am I’m off to @wandsworthtownosteopathy to get my body a long overdue MOT. I’m tight everywhere, and I’ve just been ‘dealing with it’ for far too long. So it’s time to get assessed, and hopefully manipulated into a much more healthy and optimal position. Review pending! 🙌🏼

This is important. KEEP. IT. SIMPLE. ☝🏽
_
Nail the basics, do the necessary. I wanted to take this #throwback opportunity to urge you to make sure you are NOT overlooking the basics. I can’t stress this enough. 😐
_
We have access to alllllllll the information in the world thanks to the internet, and this is an amazing resource. But I truly think it can distract us from the stuff that really matters. 🤔
_
What is really going to transform your physique from something standard to something worthy of competing for a pro card and then compete at pro level is NOT taking 10 different supplements in the morning, or your intra workout EAAs and carbs, or even your reverse banded unilateral exercises... What is going to transform you is relentless consistency with your training and eating, applying genuine intensity to your training, and challenging yourself to adapt EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK. For YEARS. ⏳
_
So please. If you’re trying to go from your own left to right, concentrate on doing the basics that will make up 80-90% of that change. Not the intricacies that will do well to make up 10% of your transformation. 🌪

Off-season is go. 🎯
_
Been sat at 105.5kg for a little while now. I’ve continued to push the weights up in my sessions, reaching new lifetime PBs on legs, matching PBs from deep in last year’s off season on main pulling movements... and still chasing PBs on the main chest movements.
_
The goal is now to push the weight up. I want to get to last off-seasons weight (~107.5kg) but with much better condition, and stupid levels of strength. 🌪
_
Wider delts, a thicker, more detailed back, and a fuller chest while the waist stays tight is what I’m chasing. And a pro card 🤷🏼‍♂️

No. 1 cause of missed back gains 👀
_
Watching this clip back tonight made me remember how much money I would have in the bank if I had £1 for every time I’d seen someone using too much momentum to jerk their way through their pull movements 🤔
_
The seal row is an absolute favourite of mine because it:
a) removes any potentially uncomfortable or risky load on your lower back.. but
b) really doesn’t give you much chance to CHEAT your way through your set 🗿
_
This is absolutely key, because even if you want to try and kid yourself so that you can write down that you managed an extra one or two reps on the exercise, you won’t even have to search very deep down within yourself to know that you’re a filthy liar, because if the weight is too heavy, you aren’t getting that bar anywhere your chest.. 🤥
_
The other thing I’d like you to take away from this video is the conscious effort I make at the start of each rep to retract the scapula. If you’re looking for lat recruitment when rowing, pull back your shoulders initially, THEN drive your elbows back. Bonus tip: this will also help prevent your cheating 😅

#throwback to a few weeks out of my first pro qualifier earlier this year ⏰
_
This was around a time when I was just beginning to feel like I had a real shot at my goal. But the thing with competing is you never truly know what’s going to happen 🤔
_
I was by far and away my best ever. I thought I was ready to compete and ready to place where I needed to in order to take a pro card home.
_
But I also took a lot of doubt with me to the Amateur Olympia. After all I planned it as a precursor to my plan a: 2bros in Coventry. In fact I doubted myself right up until the moment that myself and the other two in the top 3 were asked to leave the stage... because we were through to the finals 😅
That was the first time I truly believed I was close to my dream. And I will never forget that moment that I began believing in myself.
_
Enough talk, me and @team_lrf have a plan. I’m about 6 months out. 🌪

Two years of going to work on the lats, rhomboids... and quite clearly my delts. In fact the delts are looking absolutely disgraceful here 🌪
_
The focus between 2016 and 2018 was definitely weighted towards my front poses - chest being the focal point - but now I’m pretty happy with how I’m looking from the front it’s time to add some actual thickness and density to that mid and upper back. ⏳
_
Back sessions at the moment are starting with seal rows, seated rows and dumbbell rows.. can you spot the theme here?
_
The dumbbell rows are particularly important here, as I perform them stood more upright than is probably seen as conventional, and I’m really trying to engage the upper back- traps and rhomboids - rather than pulling the elbow back towards the hip to engage the lats more. Optimise the exercises to make the most out of them for YOUR body 👨🏽

ONE OF THOSE DAYS 🌪
_
That was the best push day I’ve had since the start of this off season. You know them days where it all just moves exactly how you want it to? 🤩
_
The two ends of the training day spectrum are the ones that really can make a difference. The one end where you feel weak, tired, and sub-optimal, but you go in and get it done regardless, and the other end where you get there and the session feels unbelievably optimal. When this happens, you HAVE to grab life and your session by the god damn balls 🎱
_
Make the most of that session because they don’t happen every week.. but try and explore why it was so good. What can you try to replicate so that more of your sessions feel top drawer 🧐

Pushing beyond the barrier 🤢
_
How many of you have gone into your first movement on leg day feeling ready to kill your session and then come out of your first movement just about ready to die? 💀
_
I always feel pretty wrecked at the end of my leg session, but last night I managed to absolutely bury myself on my first movement- leg press. 🎃
_
It was a new rep PB on set one: 11 plates a side for 10 reps, up 1 on last week, and then a drop set: 11 plates for 8 reps, 10 for 4, 9 for 3. And that was what really did it 🙃
_
I stood up from that set light headed, nauseous and with absolute jelly for legs. I was a goner. But it was just the first movement, and I still had the rest of my session to get on with 🤷🏼‍♂️
_
So I just took a few minutes and then headed over to the v squat and went again. Another heavy set and another drop set.. the same theme continues ✅
_
It takes a certain person to push beyond the barrier. Some can do it, some seem to enjoy doing it, some hate it, and some just can’t 😥. But as Will Smith says, you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Particularly in this sport. So learn to push beyond the barrier 🌪
