Five years cancer-free.
There's a brief period of time directly after grappling with the notion of your own mortality and being subsequently granted a reprieve--a temporary state of unadulterated enlightenment, where maintaining a positive, gracious outlook and making the right choices is effortless. Time erodes this mentality. I often lose perspective, take things for granted, find myself wracked with remorse over having survived where others have not. In light of this, there are certain things that I try to remember (albeit not always successfully), all of which stem from the fundamental truth that nothing in this world is guaranteed. They may seem trivial, but it helps me to see them written plainly:
-Be compassionate--you never know what another person is enduring.
-Make the most of your time. Life doesn't begin after you've prepared adequately.
-If you love someone, never miss an opportunity to tell them so.
