Since its inception in 2012, Boffo has hosted a wide range of creative types across the LGBTQIA spectrum, including Hardy, multihyphenate photographer A.L. Steiner, the painter Schandra Singh, and transgender performance artist Wu Tsang. “The program started largely as a reaction to this idea that the island was feeling primarily like just a white gay male community,” Al-Shathir said. “Fire Island is one of the only communities in the world that identifies so specifically with being LGBTQ, so how can we better represent that larger community?” “One of the reasons you might be seeing more women,” he added, “is because Boffo is supporting more women.” Hardy, who recently started her 16-week bayside rental share on the island, agreed. “It’s true that Boffo brought gender diversity and new queer bodies to the Pines,” she said. @k8hardball @h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y @wu_tsang @jd_samson @evilflower #alsteiner
