Working with the greats. ⭐

Charlotte Voake is a picture book maker we've collaborated on books with for over thirty years. And even now, her work is as fresh, funny and dynamic as it was all that time ago. It never dates. It never loses its energy. And she herself is just about the most generous artist there is! This picture was taken the day Charlotte delivered all her dinosaur-themed artwork for her next book, out in 2019. 🦕🦖🐊

KLAXON ALARM! 🚨

@chrishaughton has a new picture book coming out in 2019! You've heard it here first, folks. It's about Little Crab leaving the safety of its rockpool and venturing out into the sea with Very Big Crab for a little visit... Little Crab has never been to the sea before. The sea is big, the waves are huge and they make a scary WHOOSH! sound... Little Crab is not so sure... 🦀🌊 Brilliant brilliant Chris.

Sales conference tomorrow and we're prepping like bosses. Brand new hardbacks, paperbacks, board books ... TONS to talk about and show!

This will be my last post for my Instagram takeover, and it is in honor of my Nana, to whom “Julian is a Mermaid” is dedicated. The book came out a couple of months after she died. I showed her the proofs on her deathbed. She was, well, the coolest, funniest, most capable person I’ve ever known and I miss her every day. One of the most essential lessons I learned from her was the profoundly transformational power of beauty. Art was this woman’s lifeline, and she used it to pull herself out of all of her life’s oubliettes. Beauty is not frivolous. It is divine. This is for all the Nanas of the world, NANAS, WE SALUTE YOU! 🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊🙌🏼🙌🏿🙌🏽🙌🏾🙌🏻🙌🏼🙌🏿🙌🏾

When I was first percolating about the idea of Julián is a Mermaid I spent a lot of time thinking about drag. I watched Paris is Burning (currently available on Netflix and if you haven’t seen it yet that’s your evening sorted), and Ru Paul’s Drag Race. There is something profoundly beautiful to me about drag performances. It shows us that identity is a cloak you can wrap yourself in, making yourself anew. It’s magic. This book was meant to be a small tribute to that magic.

Because this was my first book I learned a LOT throughout the process. These two spreads are the “endpages”—the pages glued to the inside of the front and back hard covers of the book. One of the biggest lessons I learned working with my 🔥⚡️🙌🏼⚡️🔥 BRILLIANT editors Ann Stott and Katie Cunningham, is how much storytelling real- estate there actually is in a picture book. Every inch of paper can be used to advance the story, and enrich the weft of the characters’ world. The book starts before the first page...

This is one of my favorite illustrations I made for Julian is a Mermaid. However, it only appears on the inside jacket cover of the United States edition, so I wanted everyone over the pond to get a peek at it too! I’ll be offering prints of this one for sale on my website jesslove.format.com

This is a post about the invisible bias of paper...I wanted to show you some of the original artwork to demonstrate that the paper I used for Julián is a Mermaid is brown. Now, I worked on this book for a lonnnnnnng time. I did countless drafts before I even had representation, and right up until the penultimate draft, I had been using white watercolor paper. And it wasn’t working. When I tried to scan the paintings, the skin tone of my characters was getting underexposed, and the delicacy of the pastels was getting washed out. And I realized this was all because I had all of this negative space that was bright white. It skewed the value of everything around it. I started thinking about how we regard white as a “neutral” home base for artwork in the same way that it is regarded as “neutral” in society. But of course it isn’t. It made me think of my black friends who can’t find a band-aid to match their skin tone, or an Instagram filter that doesn’t underexpose them. I made a decision to banish white and do the whole book over on brown paper. Suddenly the colors glowed. The detail was preserved. And everything heaved a sigh of relief to be off of that white tundra. There is no such thing as “neutral” and no such color as “skin tone.” When we remember that there are millions of tiny biases occluding our eyes at all times and try to look deeper, a world of possibilities begins to crack open before us. .

Jess Love @jesslovedraws here again! Here is a desk-scape featuring, naturally, the number of the United States House of Representatives because every time I have to wait for paint to dry I can use that five minutes to call them and say something like, “WHY ARE YOU PUTTING KIDS IN CAGES?” or perhaps something like “A FORMER OIL LOBBYEST SHOULD NOT BE THE NEXT CANDIDATE FOR THE HEAD OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY!” or sometimes just “STOP KILLING BLACK PEOPLE!” ....because my calls are usually in all caps I imagine they really look forward to our little chats.
