Big Books for Little Hands  Celebrating the joy of books intended for children. 📚 A personal blog on the books I enjoy with my 5yo, 3yo & the baby. 📚

http://www.bigbookslittlehands.wordpress.com/

Are there any books you've replaced? Despite having a board book version of this, we are onto our second copy as it got completely mullered by all the enthusiatic flap-turning. And it's such a firm favourite, we def needed another copy! The lovely @space61 reminded me we need a new version on The Tickle Monster too - or is this a sign that 3 children is really too many!?⠀

Today's #februarysbooks18 theme of crime and mystery didn't seem to lend itself to children's picture books ... but then I remembered this master criminal!!! #slinkymalinki #criminalcat #cattheif

Is food a big area of interest for anyone else's children, or is it just my greedy guts? The fruit pages are ok but then the page of snacks is really where it's at. My middle one added his own twist to the page, where he insisted that he'd eat the icecream not the caterpillar. This then developed to him assigning each member of the family their own snack, and leaving the rest for the caterpillar. Poor Daddy always got the watermelon ... a shame since he detests it in real life!⠀

Day 15 of the #februarysbooks18 is a book released before you were born.
Turns out this one was a loooong time before I came along - any one guess how old Charlie is?! Even more amazing that so many years later my Netflix-obsessed 5yo is loving it!! #chocolateforever #roalddahlrules

Is there anyone who does NOT love this book?⠀seriously?!

For me, it's the cornerstone of any kids bookshelf - perfect from newborn upwards and enjoyed by parents and children alike. What do you think the appeal is though?⠀

Love that @anniinasbooks has picked friendship as a Valentines theme for her #februarysbooks18
The two tortoises in the final episode in the @jonklassen Hat triology are a wonderful illustration of how true friendship can involve some sacrifice (you don't get the hat 🎩) but ultimately is worth it (as you fly off in your dreams together). 🐢 🎩 🐢

Guess which is the one I love re-reading and which is the one I hide to AVOID repeating?? I'm joining the #februarysbooks18 a little late for today's challenge of books you want to re-read!

This simple but totally compelling premise in the plot is executed really neatly. The text is written in neat rhymes with clear CAPITALISATION for emphasis. The illustrations are modern and a little scribbly, with a font to match. There’s a bright colour palette that avoids primary colours, making it a bit more unusual and stylish.⠀

Altogether it simply and effortlessly hits the mark on a perfect preschool story. I bet it took ages to pull off!⠀

My kids absolutely love this one! In the monster’s plea you will surely hear the echo’s of your own offspring’s ascertation ‘I am a big boy/girl! Not a baby’. And this monster goes around trying to prove his stinky, slimy qualities win out over his babyhood. Jumping in mud, chasing flocks of birds … understand why the kids relate?!⠀

Do have any children's book you are really reluctant to let the children get their hands on?
This book is one for me! The artistic effect of the illustrations is unusual, beautiful and perfectly captures the unruly, playful cubs in their woodland world. But let's be honest, my kids wouldn't want to get their hands on it for that! It's all about the flaps.
And here the book really excels. Momenceau has been really creative in designing different shaped flaps and cut-outs to turn and peek through. See Mother Fox spot her cheeky cubIt's this unusual cutting work that makes the game of hide and seek (that surely Mother Fox is playing through gritted teeth, with thoughts of grown up telly and wine surfacing in her brain) come to life. It's not obvious even to us grown-ups which bit of the page will turn over to reveal where the cub is hiding.

Does anyone know the technique used to create these lovely illustrations? The author/illustrator is described as a 'paper artist'. Despite extensive research* I'm not sure exactly how she creates the stunning pictures. They look like ripped paper to create the Fox Family..but then digitally printed on these high quality paper pages in the book. ⠀

DAY 7 - 7 day 7 book cover challenge.
Final day! Any tips for other Insta #bookish challenges?
I've loved this one! I'm normally words then pictures in my priorities but this has made me re-assess the books by illustration style & also cover design (obvs). You might see this in my next few reviews ... Post a book cover you love.

How long does bedtime take your family? The story here, such as it is, involves Mother Fox rounding up a pack of unruly cubs to go to bed. I think we can all relate. But this book is ALL about the illustrations. There are some words but I kind of wish there weren't. I'm not sure they add much. ⠀

But I'm not keen on the books that only have adult appeal. At 5yo and 3yo my kids don't care or know about nostalgia. What they do like about this book is the ice-cool Rosie effortlessly evading the bumbling Mr Fox as she walks around the farm. It is simple slap-stick genius that appeals to preschoolers (and their parents) through the decades.⠀

What time of day do you read most with your kids? ⠀

The minimal text in Rosie's Walk means it can work at any time of day. You wouldn't think this short sentence is the dramatic peak of the story!! Like in Where's Walrus, less text leaves more room to discuss what's happening with your just-speaking child. Alternatively, your preschooler can 'read' themselves by describing the pictures independently. It's also perfect for early readers to break free of the school reading scheme fodder. Or you've also the flexibility to drag it out with long, soothing descriptions for a baby's bedtime or rattle through at lightening speed as a recalcitrant toddler's reward for getting ready to leave the house.⠀

After posting this in my #bookcoverschallenge I couldn't resist a review!
This book is all about the illustrations. Pure retro gold!  First published in 1967, this book would have graced the most stylish of paisley carpets mixing in with the Weebles and Rubric's Cubes in the playroom. For us 90s kids who aspired to flares and fringes in a Brit-pop retro-cool revival, it is equally appealing.⠀

@courageous_pages would love to see your faves!

Though the story is lovely, it’s really the illustrations that make this book for me. I love how Helen Stephen includes touches of modern life in her pictures, like parents watching tv or carrying baby in a sling. These are in all her books, even the more magically realisistic ‘Hide a Lion’ ones.⠀

She also drops in a brilliant graphic novel technique where she portrays the action frame by frame across the page – see what I mean …⠀

There’s something about the wobbly font and blurry edges in Stephen’s pictures that is both very modern and very comforting. They come close to creating that feeling you get when you read children’s books you grew up with, but are modern and more relatable for today’s childhood.⠀

@little_loves_library - let's see your faves!

Has a nickname stuck with your pet or child? Our careful selection of our middle child's name has been pretty much wasted - as soon as he could speak he started referring to himself with his nickname so it has well and truely stuck! ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
This is part of the realism I really love with this book. It has that in common with older children’s favourites like Shirley Hughes. You can believe this story would and has happened, and while it’d go down in family history, these aren’t hugely significant events or reliant on fantasy worlds.⠀⠀
