Here's an excerpt from today's @forbes interview with Eric Waldo. Check out the full interview at the link in @reachhigher2020's bio to learn more about our Executive Director of #ReachHigher and why he's still working to fight for higher education. "And one thing that really resonated with Mrs. Obama and began to take off was centering around college completion. The President had laid out this goal to get the United States to once again lead the world in college completion—it was the 2020 North Star goal. And an initiative centered around this idea really worked because ultimately it was Mrs. Obama’s own experience. She, herself, is a first generation college graduate. She and her brother Craig are the first in their family to go to college. So, that was the seed of what Reach Higher was to become, because Mrs. Obama wanted to speak directly to students about how college had changed her life, and she wanted to speak to how it could change their lives as well. So, that’s how she kind of became, as I like to say, the 'School Counselor in Chief.'"

"Being accepted into the college of my dreams made all of my sleepless nights worthwhile. Yes, people can take away my mother’s job or even a close family member, but they cannot take away my education. They will not be able to touch my Yale Young Global Scholars diploma, nor my Columbia University diploma, that I will feverishly work to receive at the end of these next four years. I am a first-generation college student and I’m proud to be one, even though I had to fight to get here. So, I attended College Signing Day not just because it was a chance to hear the inspirational words of Michelle Obama, but also because college is the key to success no matter what challenges you have been presented in life. Ever since I was a little girl, I was raised with the ideology that knowledge is power. With a college education in this day and age, this statement is indisputable.” - Aneesah Ayub, Senior at The Beacon School. Aneesah attended Mrs.Obama's #CollegeSigningDay celebration in NYC on May 5th. She will start her freshman year @Colombia University this fall.

"Fort Worth Independent School District’s mission is to 'Prepare all students for success in college, career and community leadership.' Preparing students for success in college is such a huge part of what we do. College Signing Day allows us the opportunity to showcase, as a district, the amazing students that we have, and celebrate their accomplishments and their success. Creating a college-going culture is key in a large urban school district. I think we couldn’t cultivate this culture in a better way. The energy on each campus is amazing. The students, parents, teachers, administrators, counselors, and college and career readiness coaches are all so proud. It is nothing like seeing our students get excited about going to college. They have such a sense of pride that is written all over their face. The feeling is overwhelming and simply priceless." - Tonni Grant #BetterMakeRoom #ReachHigher

“I loved seeing all of my classmates excited to start the next chapter of their lives. I was sure we had made our parents, teachers, counselors and other supporters proud. As students cheered for their current schools and future schools, it was evident everyone took pride in their life choices. College Signing Day made me want to succeed more than I already had. I was standing in a room full of students who would make a positive impact on the world in the future." - Ajah Hamilton, rising freshman at Otterbein University

Ahnesti Gastonia, a rising freshman at Ohio State University, had this to say about her #CollegeSigningDay experience. "College Signing Day was a great experience for seniors. Leaving high school is scary, but being surrounded by those who are taking the same step forward as you, and learning what the future held for our fellow peers made this an amazing experience! We even got some inspiration from guest speakers to help us navigate along the way. It was a great way to bring all of us seniors in the district, together as one, and help us remember that we are not alone.” #BetterMakeRoom #ReachHigher 🎓🎉 All week, we'll be sharing #CollegeSigningDay stories from students, educators, and communities across the country and world. "We are the school counselors at Lithia Springs High School in Lithia Springs, Georgia, and we created the first annual College/Career Decision Day for seniors who brought their acceptance letter to us and made a commitment to attend college or join a military branch...We wanted to provide an event which made our students feel special, while recognizing their ability to reach for higher goals than the generation before them. By highlighting our students who were meeting deadlines, submitting all of the documentation to receive an application decision and committing to their college of choice — all before high school graduation — our underclassmen would see the timeline which they needed to strive for and the incentives they could receive for doing so." -@lshs_counselors #BetterMakeRoom #ReachHigher 🎓🎉 All week, we'll be sharing #CollegeSigningDay stories from students, educators, and communities across the country and world. “It was important for Jamaica to join the global movement, to play our part in encouraging, supporting, and lifting education...All day respected journalists, social media influencers, business leaders, teachers, parents, and students alike continued to celebrate the opportunity and impact of their education...We (college counselors) shared our favorite memories from our own college days, while students shared what they looked forward to the most about heading to college. Our kids talked about how much they looked forward to a change of scenery, meeting new people from different cultures, new experiences, and new learning opportunities...We salute all of our college-bound students. The world #BetterMakeRoom for them!” - @nicolemclarencampbell, Founder of AIM Educational Services 🇯🇲🎓🎉 @aiskjamaica #BetterMakeRoom #ReachHigher #CollegeSigningDay

"Upon arriving to Signing Day, we were greeted with a large sign that said, “Hinsdale High School, Senior Signing Day 2017,” and one by one we placed our names on the sign and wrote down where our diploma would take us. The places where people in our class were headed to ranged from colleges and universities in-state, out-of-state, and overseas, as well as the names of companies that those who where were brave enough to take on the workforce immediately were headed. Once our ceremony was done, and pictures were taken, we noticed the big banner that had been placed on the wall, which was so full of bright futures and new experiences, we couldn’t help but feel hopeful and proud of not only ourselves — but of each other." - Kayle Hussey & Becca Gringeri, Seniors at Hinsdale High School #BetterMakeRoom #ReachHigher 🎓🙌🏽 ...
