I spent all day yesterday in shock over the loss of one of my biggest mentors, one of my biggest champions and one of my most cherished friends, Bill Paxton. Just a few weeks ago we went to dinner, he showed me his new place, each piece of art he decorated it with and we sat in his living room until 3am talking about life, our family, our business and what’s important. He told me after his surgery he was going to live life differently, stress less, travel more, spend time with his family. He told me I’d fight through this. He told me all of what I’m experiencing lately was just "the price of an education, Steve. Just the price of an education.” He had no doubts as to whether or not I’d weather the storm. A few days before his surgery I asked him if there was anything he needed and he just said, “No Steve, just come and visit me at the house, I’m not goin anywhere. I’ll be fine.” If I knew that was the last time I was going to speak to him I would have paused before we ended the phone call and told him how much I loved him, how thankful I was to him for fighting for me, teaching me, championing me, caring about me in all the years I’ve known him. I would have told him that he can’t go. That the world would miss him. That he was far too good it would be far too soon. You see, Bill was not just an actor, he was a patron of the arts, a director, a beautiful writer, a dad, a husband, a brother, a great son and a thoughtful, kind, exemplary human being. He treated me with so much respect and gave me the confidence to be more than just a guy who chucks himself down stairs for a living. He remembered the most minute details of stories I wrote over 15 years ago and would hound me every time I saw him that I should be making films. I will miss him more than I can even describe. Life is too short. It really is. Take nothing for granted, be kind, make a difference, show the world who you are and what you’re made of. Please. We need it. I will miss this man so much and I hope to see him in another life, smiling at me, telling me in that sweet Texas accent of his, “It’s just the price of an education, Steve. Just the price of an education.” - sb
