Today is the last of Manouso’s weeklong teacher training intensive. So much knowledge to digest. What has been most profound is learning that through yoga, I’ve a chance of recharging my thyroid glands which I recently learned is out of whack. When I first read through my online search about ways to alleviate hypothyroidism, all pointed to taking daily medication for the rest of my life. For those close to me, that’s pretty much like saying a dose of cod liver oil everyday, which I spewed out when I was a kid - it didn’t get very far. I still have a dislike of any kind of pills/medicine. So now, it’s on to throat & neck extensions. Manouso had us in “forehead head-balance” - a group of 60+ teachers and teachers in training the first day. Part II of the Sirsana series. So after a few mins in headstand comes the variations. That’s when I go “oh s#1+” — That’s also when I’ve learned to breathe deeper, hold steadier, focus on my internal balance more” - something I try to practice in life when things seem to come tumbling down. Sometimes I tumble big time. Sometimes it seems impossible to get out of the quagmire but I know, this too shall change. “Parivrtta Vajra Sirsana” - Revolved Thunderbolt pose in Headstand.

Salamba Sirsana (Headstand) is one of the pinnacles of Iyengar yoga. Just 10 years ago, I’d never have imagined holding the pose for more than 30 seconds. Now I still have to work on stilling the mind and keeping my balance at 5-6 minutes. Then there’s Parivrrta Eka Pada Sirsana (revolved one foot headstand, in pic) which is a whole other level. Not quite sure how far back the ‘back-leg’ is and not letting it get too far. It’s a whole different ballgame of learning to trust myself, and hence goes the practice! Heels over head learning to love myself! 😉

Inspired by Patricia Walden’s intensive last month I got into Paryankasan “couch pose” after several other back extension prep poses. Far from feeling like I’m laying on a couch, it’s a pose I cringe to practice. The benefits are astounding however and I’m thinking it’s a pose I’ll need to get comfy with ;). From Tias Little’s website on paryankasan: “This pose is beneficial for asthma, lung conditions, shallow breathing, depression, low blood pressure, chronic fatigue and kyphosis.” Let’s get on the couch!
