The creative team at @emporiumchicago continues to facilitate the collision of craft beer with fantasy worlds at their newest Logan Square pop-up bar, The Society of Sordid Sorcery. The layer features Polyjuice Potion, a tasty kettle sour with plums & elderberries from @CentralStateBrewing in Indiana. My wife, sister, and I went over on Saturday to geek out over the place and had a blast. Congrats to @jorgeclooney & @itsjustjared for another gem.

Happy Easter to all my beer pals out there. I'm finally dipping into the first allocation of @lostabbey's Sinners & Saints club, and this first bottle is a dandy. I've always wondered when a numbered series begins to lose it's meaning and it looks like they decided #019 was high enough, converting the latest installment to Veritas Peach. This blend dials back the acidity, which I've noted is a welcome-trend happening across the country. The fruit dosage feels right on the money, leaving behind plenty of the classic Veritas character. The added drinkability leaves me wanting more than a glass, unlike past editions, which were perfect for splitting at a bottle share. Cheers!

So @PrairieAles put together a pretty interesting program where a (large) group could pull together resources ($3,600) and buy an entire barrel's worth of BA Stout, choose what they want in it, and have their own custom name on the 12oz bottles. I believe depending on the adjuncts chosen, which determined the yield, you wound up paying somewhere in the $9-12 range per bottle. Not too shabby. I decided not to pass up the chance to build-your-own-pastry-stout, because why not? We went with Cocoa Nibs, Coconut, and [drum roll........] Vanilla. While I'm not the biggest proponent throwing a bunch of stuff in these beers, I think this is an awesome business idea and from what I heard, as many as 60 barrels were sold? Did anyone else get in on this and have any thoughts?

Cantillon has a long history of using Rhubarb in their lambic, dating back to Zwanzes from a decade ago. As Jean’s wife Nathalie's favorite, the long awaiting wide release using the tart fruit disappointed some whale seekers with its subtleties and perhaps underwhelming funk, but the blend of 1 & 2 year lambic got me pretty excited. As a kindergarten teacher, Nath's children surprised her with the label, which is expected to be a rotating theme with future batches. I give Nath an A, and an A+ to @jeremyrbryan for sharing 🍻.

Citra, Citra, Citra, a triple dry-hopped Double IPA from @marzbrewing, capped off with a little Amarillo & Centennial to, as I like to say: "round out the rough edges", or as @tlanj put it: "make it a little less catty". I wish I had another of these to drink right meow.

I can't say enough good things about the experience @UneAnnee's Tap Room, with 17 wild/belgian styles on draft, 6 adjunct stouts, and a delicious Citra & Simcoe hazy IPA. Thankfully they allow a small 6oz size so you can put a reasonable dent in the list. That was the perfect size for a lot of these. I ended with Le Seul XXIV, their wild ale with plum, pictured here. My favorites were Le Grand Monde 2018-1, a barrel-aged wild ale with black currants and vanilla beans. Another was El Zacaton, a Tap Room only mole-inspired Imperial stout with almond flour, cacao nibs, cinnamon, vanilla and chiles. Gold Jerry, Gold!

I often get asked what I think about the hazy IPA category. I've heard all the arguments for why it's hear to stay, as well as the ones that say it's just a fad. In my opinion, craft beer isn't just one thing anymore, it's segmented pretty heavily. I don't see the desire for crisp, clean, drinkable beers going anywhere, ever. Conversely, I don't see the enthusiast's desire for big mouthfeel and amplified flavor to die down anytime soon either. There's enough breweries with solid, yet conservative enough business models to prove that both will be a significant part of the future. One of my favorite local gems is @middlebrowbeer, who pokes fun at their cloudy IPA series, naming it "Sells Out". Their adventures in process and hop exploration is helping expedite the building of their dream. And I'm 100% in support of that. This is Sells Out - Denali, a unique hop that our brewers have been working with more and more, which I was excited to try in this form. Absolutely amazing gents, well done.

After years of acquiring many many stupid pieces of glassware that make no sense, I've trimmed them down significantly and now have a strict, one-in-one-out policy. After trying multiple homeruns from @afterthoughtbrewing, I tracked down a glass knowing that it would be a regular thing. These beautiful barrel-aged saisons are shockingly available on the regular at @beercellarchi in Glenn Ellyn and at very reasonable prices for the style and effort. This one here was Bière de Pieces 2:, a blend of stainless, gin barrel, and oak barrel fermented saisons that came out wonderfully.

A Little Spark of Madness from @centralstatebrewing - one of those coffee stouts that can smack you in the nose from 3 feet away. It trades a little body in exchange for drinkability at 8%, which is a nice change of pace for these beers. Thanks @roger617 for sending this my way ☕️🍻🎇.
