SGT Chris Birdwell slept on the floor of an Afghan Army outpost in Afghanistan’s Laghman province in August of 2012 while on a training assistance mission. Just a few weeks later, SGT Birdwell was killed when an Afghan soldier turned his weapon on his American counterparts in what the US Military calls a “green on blue” incident. #memorialday

The people of the Zhong cave-the last consistently inhabited cave in China, originally fled to the caverns in this remote corner of Guizhou province to escape the bandits and highwaymen that roamed the valleys in the years before the founding of the PRC. Their descendent have stubbornly refused repeated calls by the government to move out over the past decade, suffering grinding poverty and isolation in the process. Tourism and a wealthy American donor have helped to develop a small economy and some basic infrastructure for the 18 families that still call the cave Home. However, many worry that leaving the cave would deny them access to their land and sole means of making a living. Acrimony and mistrust has ensued.
