๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿ‚Rich hues of crimson, orange and green reflect in a New England lake. ๐Ÿค“Leaf colour change is a fascinating process #didyouknow that the gorgeous colours are there all along โ€˜waitingโ€™ behind the green. As sunlight wanes, chlorophyll in the leaves starts to deplete, which starts the leaf fall process. The green pigment is broken down into colourless compounds and Other pigments are synthesised revealing yellows and reds. โžก๏ธLink in bio for a video explainer from @chris.packham

Meet the brilliantly named sharp- shinned hawk. During migration these hawks can be seen in large numbers in North America with hundreds sometimes seen passing through favoured spots on coastlines and lake shores. Some individuals are long-distance migrants covering distances of up to 1500km between breeding and wintering grounds. Birds bathe to keep their feathers in good condition. ๐Ÿ“ท Image by @jtw86 via @audubonsociety/Audubon Photography Awards.

๐Ÿ’™This beautiful North American tree swallow with its deep-blue iridescent feathers and clean white front congregate at dusk in their thousands. Much like European starlings spectacles often seen in the UK, tree swallows โ€˜swarmโ€™ in breath-taking aerial displays.

What a cheeky chipmunk! These lively and speedy creatures are diurnal, coming out during the day. They are vulnerable to a range of predators particularly at night and go into a state of partial hibernation during winter.
Their diet is varied - ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿ•ท๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ„๐ŸŒฐ๐Ÿ‡ even small๐Ÿธ!!

๐Ÿ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿฟ Autumnwatch is back! This autumn, the team are heading to glorious New England to set up home in New Hampshire. In this one-off special series, weโ€™ll be exploring what is one of the most spectacular autumn events on the planet. Every year millions of people gather to witness the famous leaf colour change as the foliage changes from green to vibrant reds and oranges. A sight to behold! Weโ€™ll also be meeting some familiar faces and some of their slightly less familiar relatives, including moose, black bears, chipmunks, foxes and a cast of feathered characters too! Join us on @bbctwo this October for what promises to be a โ€˜Watchโ€™ to remember.
