"Being a social work intern, I’ve had a lot of opportunities to help people who are in need... I really wanted to focus on the people that I could help the most, the people in society that everyone else shrugs off."
I’ve actually had a lot of experience with trying to be the light to somebody, and it rarely is some of the big things that I think, 'Oh, this will show them love' ... It’s just those very simple, small things that actually show them that I care. One of those things is just listening to their story. I’ve noticed [clients] try to share their story with everyone and anyone that will listen; I think it’s simply because they don’t feel like any one person hears or cares about their story, so that’s where I start with them. ‘Tell me a little bit about yourself. Tell me how you got here.’ Whatever that means to them. The stories that I hear are very interesting, but also most of the time it screams 'I want to be known, I want to be loved, I want to be accepted, just like everyone else.'"
