The Church of San Cataldo (1160) in Palermo is an outstanding example of a socio-cultural syncretism between Greek, Roman, Arabic, Norman cultures.
From 827 to 1061, Sicily was under Arab rule. Thereafter, Normans empire (1130-1199) greatly admired Arabic architecture and continued to use Arabic architects, artists and craftsmen for their new constructions. As a results several of Palermo’s churches are mounted by red domes or covered in arabic style decorative arts, and also surrounded by palm gardens.
