Winnipeg was definitely a pleasant surprise. Pound for pound the best coffee city I have been to in Canada. Every single shop was beautifully designed, independant and served up great coffee.
There are certainly some gems in Calgary and Vancouver, yet I have never experienced a coffee scene outside Melbourne and Berlin where every shop really nailed it to such an extent. I would even be so bold as to say that the scene here is even better than Vancouver.
While many shops still have to do vanilla syrup and such because the scene is so new, other places were doing great food, lovely curated retail sections, and even serving single malt whiskey.
Highlight was probably Dogwood where the Aeopress competition was held because of the very beautiful space that has a Probat roaster, and shares a building with a co-work space, cocktail bar, art gallery and even rooftop bar. They only do manual brew coffee and espresso, and the food was top notch.
Thom Bargen (featured in the photo) was also a favorite for it's beautiful decor and great coffee.
