The Art Gallery of Hamilton  Located in the heart of downtown Hamilton, the AGH is Southern Ontario's oldest and largest public art gallery and museum.

Vivian Maier: Street Photographer | On view now until March 2019 "Since her work was discovered, Vivian Maier (1926-2009) created a strong interest in the art world. Eccentric, mysterious, and solitary, her story fascinates everyone, even those who were the most skeptical at first. Her work has a sense of urban poetry, tenderness, and kindness, which mesmerizes the audience and the artistic institutions around the world." - Vinciane Jones

Hamilton Now: Subject | Artist Highlight: Kiera Boult
Another of our amazing artists involved in #AGHHamontNow is the hilarious and witty Kiera Boult!

Kiera is an interdisciplinary artist and administrator with a BFA in Criticism and Curatorial Practice from OCAD University. Boult’s practices are playfully reliant on camp, comedy and approachability. By using the trope of the therapy booth, she posits the artist as facilitator; opening conversations surrounding race politics, class, intersectional feminism and relational aesthetics, all the while skeptically addressing issues that surround the role and/or identity of the artist and the institution.

AGH Collection Highlight | Biriukova's "The Prospector, Peter Swanson" (1934)

Biriukova's "The Prospector, Peter Swanson" (1934), portrays the ordinary working man.

With his massive arms folded across his spruce-green shirt, Swanson exudes strength and confidence. A mountain of a man, he takes up almost all of the space.

The hills behind him echo the forms and colours of his forearms, his shoulders and his eyebrows, making him look at one with the land, a closeness that draws attention to his occupation.

Swanson's frontal pose, his centrality and the way he gazes directly at us recall a saint in a traditional Russian icon, a not-too-surprising link — for her, not him.

Kim Adams: Bruegel-Bosch Bus | Permanent Installation

Repeatedly in his work, Canadian artist Kim Adams has explored the patterns of a mobile society, creating works of art that are eccentric hybrids of the readymade.

Blending humour, satire and seriousness, he builds “worlds” as a means of social critique. Adams’ installations exist comfortably in the space that divides life and art. His works have been presented in two very different social worlds: in a densely social environment such as a park or street and in a museum setting like the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Neither setting is privileged.

A magnificent visual masterpiece, Bruegel-Bosch Bus consists of a 1960 Volkswagen that appears to pull a post-industrial universe displaying a cornucopia of fantastic and seductive worlds that play with our senses. This futuristic diorama is a permanent fixture in the AGH Sculpture Atrium overlooking the Irving Zucker Sculpture Garden, past Hamilton City Hall and the Niagara Escarpment.

Speaking for Herself | On view now until March 2019
Artist Highlight: Helen McNicoll

It appears that the sitter in McNicoll’s painting is being swallowed whole by her dress. Opulent, delicate, precious, and overwhelming, the garment occupies a good portion of the lower half of the canvas; it is the clear subject of the painting. The dress is a chaste white—the constraints of female dress, all hoops and corsets, speak directly to centuries of physical and psychological confinement on the part of women’s bodies and spirits.

James Street North: Vintage Photographs by Cees and Annerie van Gemerden
On view now until January 6, 2019

The van Gemerdens set up a live-work studio on King William Street, which included a darkroom, where they developed and printed their 35mm negatives. Today, they still call the James Street North area home, continuing to shoot in digital, having amassed an important and stunning visual archive of the city’s artistic and political history.

This exhibition highlights the formative series On and Around James Street North (1984-85), shot just as the artists arrived to Hamilton. The series offers unique and timely views of familiar places in the neighbourhood—some of which have changed, many of which remain. The photographs feature residents and merchants along James Street North, a historically diverse cultural neighbourhood, well-known for its grassroots artist-run culture.

Vivian Maier: Street Photographer | On view until January 2019
Vivian Maier held on to her Rolleiflex camera as tightly as she did to her secret talent of photography. Hiding her photos from the world, it wasn't until after her death that she was discovered to be one of the most prolific photographers of our time.
Come witness her talents yourself this weekend here at the AGH, the only Canadian venue to hold this exhibition!

Speaking for Herself | Artist Highlight: Suzy Lake

In her image 'Extended Breathing While Waiting for Rain', Lake places her figure among trees in an assertive stance. She is self-determined, testing her endurance and the limits of her aging body.
Lake has described her Extended Breathing series as “celebrating the body by feeling the simple act of breathing.” She creates these photographs by standing in the same position for one hour. Her blurred image is the result of the long exposure time and her inevitable movements throughout. “While I’m standing there for one hour,” Lake says, “I’m making the image in my mind’s eye, but what I’m thinking about is not predictable. Sometimes I’m in a meditative state, sometimes I’m responding to my body, sometimes to a memory.” Whatever this durational inner state might be, Lake’s outer being fully occupies and defines the landscape she inhabits. Here, she is simultaneously subject and object, of her own making, and on her own terms.

Come see our powerful exhibition Speaking for Herself, on now until March 2018, for free anytime thanks to Orlick Industries.

SIGNS OF LIFE: 2018 Women’s Art Association of Hamilton Annual Exhibition
Artist Highlight: Jodie Hart
. . . . .
Jodie Hart has been immersed in art since childhood; first learning to paint by watching her father. She completed her Diploma of Illustration at Sheridan college in 1998, and after winning numerous scholarships attended McMaster University where she continued her art studies, graduating in 2007. After experimenting with various subject matter she now focuses almost exclusively on allegorical still life painting. The paintings are a reminder of the transience of life and show the objects as pround and noble, even while their beauty is fading. To achieve this Jodie uses dramatic lighting, often in the form of a direct sunbeam. The sweeping light gives the objects a real sense of being caught in a moment in time. They are changing before our eyes, but for this moment they are immortal.

Hamilton Now: Subect | Artist Highlight: Nedda Baba and Amber Helene Müller St. Thomas
. . . . .
Over the course of two years, @neddababa and @amberhelenemullerstthomas made casual public performances as an experiment. Driven by the need to make space for themselves as queer artists, in public but also in the context of their respective families’ traditional upbringing, the artists use honest and simple interventions as a way to challenge various queer issues from their lived experiences. The performances were not spectacular—aside from having a photographer present to document the scene, it was often not apparent that they were performing. Other performances invited direct public engagement, such as the first example below.

Come visit the AGH and see their powerful images accompanied with a more in-depth analysis of their work, along with other pieces by inspiring #Hamont artists!

Contributing Toronto-based artists include Sonya Filman, Karly Kayle, Johanna Thompson, Scott Osborne, and Ebrin Bagheri, with 12 documentation credit to Sam Lowen.
