THE PROBLEM WITH PRICING YOURSELF TOO LOW
“You naturally want to drum up as much business as possible. Setting low prices may seem like the best way to do this. If you’re business is new, you may have the notion of starting off with introductory bargain prices and raising them later. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to raise prices once people are accustomed to paying a certain price. You set your prices at the level that you want/need and you offer a discount to your first clients in order to build your portfolio.
In general, the lower your prices, the less value you are attributing to your own work. You may not see it that way, but others surely will. You may get clients who are seeking a bargain. However, such people will flock to another photographer who’s even cheaper the first chance they get. You don’t want to engage in this kind of race to the bottom.” - The Cotswold Photographer

Listening to others •

In your journey you will hear a lot of voices, and I mean a lot. Ultimately you have to figure out which ones you want to listen to. I believe it’s great to listen and learn but let your instincts guide your actions and what you do. Be curious and develop your own voice in the midst of all the voices the voices. Sometimes your voice is the combination of the all the other voices you’ve heard filtered through your own personal sensibilities. But then again sometimes it’s great to ignore everybody and create something truly unique. It’s all about balance. •

Be the Master of your craft
------------
So this morning I'm watching BBC news and I come across the story of Jacob Collier from North London who makes music in his bedroom. He released his multi-instrument music online which went viral.
What struck me about him was that he plays all his instruments (and they are a lot), does all his own arrangements, does all the vocals and does all the videos. He is truly a multi talented creative, oh yea his won two Grammys, yes two Grammys. Isn't that amazing for someone that started making music from his bedroom.
He developed and mastered his craft.
Too often we walk the line of mediocrity and want to be the next big thing. I believe being a truly great photographer is being a master of your craft. Shoot over and over again, experiment, seek knowledge, learn to create to narratives in photographs. Developing mastery isn't just about fstops and L lens, it goes deeper than that, it's about creating photographs with soul. --------------

Phenomenal woman by the amazing Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me. ---------------------- I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me. ---------------------- Image featured in @blanckdigital about African Female Archetypes Model: Nwando Ebeledike @thenwando Stylist: Mpona Lebajoa @_mpona Stylist assistant: Misha Khanbabaee-Fard @mishafard Makeup: Christina Lomas @chrissie_b_makeup Hair: Neusa Gonclaves @awesomehaircreations Coat by @7962studio -------------------------------------------------------------------------- #love #art #photography #portrait #asiko #photooftheday #potd #portraiture #instagram #instagramhub #instahub #igdaily #africa #instagramhub #archetypes #editorial #queen

For designers: Shooting your lookbook, things to consider on the day -------------------------- Be the first one there. You don't want to be rushed. You want to have time to brainstorm with the photographer during set up, and have time to handle any last minute roadblocks or issues. Prepare for the unexpected. -------------------------- Have your creative brief or mood board and shot list printed out or on your ipad, to reference throughout the shoot. You’ll want to be looking at the shots to make sure they match to your vision. Being able to mark up your documents is important, because things will always change on the fly and you’ll want to be able to make notes or move things around as needed. -------------------------- Don't forget the snacks! Photoshoots make people hungry. --------------------------- Stay on task and be aware of your shot count throughout the day. The first few looks always take the longest, but once you get in the groove you want to keep that flow going as long as you can. Snacks help. Did I mention snacks? -------------------------- Bring some way to play music. Nothing makes a shoot more awkward than silence. ------------------------- Lookbook shoot for Celeste Ann London @anncelestelondon lookbook. 5 things to consider when putting together an editorial ---------------------------------------------------------- Idea is key: Before you start, sort the idea. The idea dictates everything. It dicatates the colours, the model, the compositions, the fashion, basically everything

Mood-board: Think of a Moodboard as a way to communicate your ideas and vision to others. There are various apps you can use to create moodboards, a simple one if Pinterest. It’s also great for getting inspiration about your shoot.

Squad: The team makes or breaks your shoot. Pick the right people to work with for the right project. I have been fortunate to connect with a lot of creatives off Instagram, it’s sometimes a good place to start.

Equipment: The mood you are trying to portray dictates, the type of lighting, camera, lenses and retouching technique needed for the editorial. Before creating you should have an idea of how you want the final images to look.

Model: Think of her or him as the canvas through which you express your ideas. In other words, the model is important and not every model is right for every project. Modelling agencies and online platforms like Instagram are good places to meet models. Choose wisely.

Location: The idea again determines location. So whether it is outside or indoors, it has to fit into the story you are trying to tell. Location is vital in the narrative you are trying to showcase. ---------------------------------------------------------- For this editorial cover for @blanckdigital called Archetypes I explored the roles of African women in cultural space by creating archetypes working with Model: Nwando Ebeledike @thenwando Stylist: Mpona Lebajoa @_mpona Stylist assistant: Misha Khanbabaee-Fard @mishafard Makeup: Christina Lomas @chrissie_b_makeup Hair: Neusa Gonclaves @awesomehaircreations ---------------------------------------------------------- #love #art #photography #portrait #asiko #photooftheday #potd #portraiture #instagram #instagramhub #instahub #igdaily #africa #instagramhub #archetypes #editorial #queen

# Every photo is about something.
Every photo needs a subject, it's what the photo is about. The same way a story or a song is about something, also translates into photographs. Shooting for a few years now I've found the story doesn't always have to be about a specific element in the photo. Sometimes it's just about a mood or an emotion.
Take for instance Philomena, her expression, her body language, her stare, they all contribute to that something in this photo.

Workshop on developing a style. ---------------------------
One of the things that comes in my conversations with people about photography is my style. People feel my images have a certain emotional and aesthetic context to them which essentially define my style.
Style is a by-product of a truly engaging photography journey. True style is not something you can just conjure up, it's the result of shooting, experimenting and refining your vision craft.
On the 2nd of May I will be conducting a workshop at @niphec on Developing your style and standing out from the crowd. Looking forward to imparting things I have learnt over the years into other creative minds. ---------------------------

7 things I would tell myself in the past ----------------------------- 1. Live in the truth that you were and always good enough.
2. Create what is important to you, it will pay off, I promise.
3. When you get a No, keep pushing, in fact push harder.
4. You are your greatest obstacle, cut yourself some slack and stop being hard on yourself.
5. The things you think that are strange about you are some of your greatest attributes and will make your work unique, use them.
6. Forget everybody else and create something for you.
7. You are beautiful and You are worthy.
So what would tell yourself if you time-travelled back to the past?

A hard hitting note about selling you work * “I know, I know, no one’s buying. Bullshit. You’re not selling. By selling I do not mean you’ve got a BUY NOW link on your site. That’s passive. And I’m willing to bet you’re marketing to photographers. Listen, photographers don’t buy the work of other photographers. It’s rare. You know who buys photographs? Magazines. Companies. Professional offices. Interior designers and architects. Hotels and B&Bs. Hell, people at craft fairs are making more money than most of us, selling $50 prints. You know why? They’re selling. They’re hustling. And they aren’t at home complaining that no one’s buying, while convincing themselves their work is worth too much to let it go for less than $500. I know it’s not easy, but the internet isn’t a panacea. It’s not a substitute for building an audience of real people who want to buy your work. That is the hard work, friends. Finding the audience that wants your work, and then asking them to buy it.” – David Duchemin *
