Doing what you love and a kick up the ass
---
Inspirational words by Gary Vaynerchuk “Let’s start with passion. There is [sic] way too many people in this room right now, that are doing stuff they hate. PLEASE STOP DOING THAT. There is no reason in 2008 to do shit you hate. None. Promise me you won’t. Because you can lose just as much money being happy as hell.”
“Stop crying and just keep hustling. Hustle is the most important word ever. And that’s what you need to do. You need to work so hard.” “If you for a second – a half a second – don’t believe in what you’re doing, whether it’s your personal brand or the product you represent, GET OUT NOW. We only get to play this game once. One Life.” “If you’re doing something else and you want to do this thing you love, you do it after hours. You work 9-6, you get home, you kiss the dog, and you go to town. You start building your equity in your brand after hours. Everybody has time. STOP WATCHING F*CKING “LOST”!” A story about love in more ways Freckled fire Yasmin. If you wait until everything in your life is perfect before you begin something challenging and new, you'll be waiting forever. The best time is NOW. ~ Bill Phillips. --- The time is now my friends, seize the day and make it count. It’s not going to be perfect so you might as well get on with it.

Representation matters
--- “I received a letter from a girl and I’d like to share just a small part of it with you: "Dear Lupita," it reads, "I think you’re really lucky to be this black but yet this successful in Hollywood overnight. I was just about to buy Dencia’s Whitenicious cream to lighten my skin when you appeared on the world map and saved me.
I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin.
And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside. There is no shade to that beauty.” ~ the beautiful and intelligent Lupita Nyongo
There is nothing more beautiful than seeing someone who represents the beauty that you on the screen.

Representation matters --- “For so long, Black actors have been forced to usually play roles like the comic relief, the ghetto best friend, or the thug villain (with the exception of actors such as Denzel Washington and Viola Davis). But with the introduction of the Black Panther in the film industry, it’s proof Black actors can play more than the stereotypical roles we’ve been reduced to. We can play heroes, we can play kings, we can play the role of one of the most important members of the biggest @Marvel superhero coalition, and so much more. Needless to say, we can play dope roles.” ~ The Odessey Online

Why Black Panther matters
--- As a kid who read comics black panther was one of the very few black superheroes I came across.
For a child it is a beautiful thing to see yourself represented in a positive light in pop culture. What is also great is that it’s a hero steeped in culture and heritage and not drug deals or street thugging (is thugging a word?). @ryancoogler and @marvelstudios have made a film that is part of the positive narrative changing voice of Africa and the black race and boy does it matter.
I can imagine a child being empowered watching @blackpanther thinking “That superhero looks just like me”

Young Queens

Being a control freak I was apprehensive about working with kids. I’d heard all the horror stories. Coupled with the fact that the shoot took a week to plan from the photography stand point I was sweating buckets.
The thing about kids is, they need to trust you, if they don’t you are toast and your shoot could go to hell.
One thing I was conscious of was not to talk down to them and so I made sure I lowered my height and met at their eye level. This way I made sure it was a bit of a collaboration. First impressions are everything with kids.
I created these images for @lookslikemeuk a talent and casting agency who had this amazing project going out tomorrow. Thankful to @vinecreatives for bringing me onboard.

A flower blooms.

A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it. It just blooms. ~ Zen Shin
The internet can be a hard place; you see other people’s beautiful lives and beautiful work and compare. Don’t do it it’s a trap to depression.
First thing, the instagram life is a carefully curated existence, it is not real. Nobody shows the real picture of it all so be careful not to believe it all.
Secondly focus on you and stay your lane, it will all turn out well and you will grow into your destiny and just bloom.

Don't abandon your dream

Your dreams will inspire many people, no doubt. But your dreams will also summon opposition. They will cause a wide variety of reactions, including jealousy and anger.
You’ve got to come to terms with the fact that you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you cannot please all of the people all of the time.
Your dream is going to ruffle some feathers, but don’t play chicken. Operate in a spirit of bold humility, knowing that God goes before you.

A story about struggle and the butterfly. .
A man spent hours watching a butterfly struggling to emerge from its cocoon. It managed to make a small hole, but its body was too large to get through it. After a long struggle, it appeared to be exhausted and remained absolutely still.
The man decided to help the butterfly and, with a pair of scissors, he cut open the cocoon, thus releasing the butterfly. However, the butterfly’s body was very small and wrinkled and its wings were all crumpled.
The man continued to watch, hoping that, at any moment, the butterfly would open its wings and fly away. Nothing happened; in fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its brief life dragging around its shrunken body and shrivelled wings, incapable of flight.
So here's the thing, the man was hoping to help the butterfly but in actuality he messed with natures way of training the butterfly and strengthening its wings.

We all want avoid the struggles and wish they would pass as soon as possible. The struggles are there to teach and prepare us for the road ahead.

The hero within
“Go inward. That’s the real work… The solutions are not outside of us. Get to know who you really are, because as you search for the hero within, you inevitably become one…” – Emma Tiebens
The best work we create comes from within. Forget what everybody else is doing, you really don't want to be sheep anyway. Look within, the answers you seek are there. Trust your inside, that's where awesomeness resides. Your story and who you are dictate the work you should create and will set you apart from everyone else. If you doing something that's heartfelt it will be different, and it will be a reflection of you.

There is a purpose in your struggle. A diamond is created through pressure. A pearl is created from a drop of sand getting into a clam, and the pearl is birthed from the irritation. You were cut and designed, for this very dream you have. Our dreams are birthed in our struggles

# Chase the dream
In every dream journey, there comes a moment when you have to quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death.
You have to go big or go home.
You have to take the road less traveled or settle for status quo.
You have to bite the bullet or turn your back on your dreams.
If you find yourself against the wall, you have to make decision that will determine your destiny. You can run away from what you are afraid of, but you’ll be running the rest of your life. Or you can face your fears, taking a flying leap of faith, and chase the dream.
A curious case of Wonder Woman.

The power is in our hands.
I’m sure everybody has seen the HM advert with the young black kid and how it caused uproar in the world. What I especially like is how people decided TIMEs UP. It’s time we change the narrative about ourselves because for so long someone else has been writing the story and it was a horrible one that made us look and feel inferior.
I loved that there were many illustrations and photo edits changing the original photo into something uplifting showing the boy as king and not as a monkey. We have the power to re-write and change our destiny. Never think what you do won’t make a difference; I can promise you it does, in more ways than you will ever know. It’s time to shape ourselves and our stories in a positive light because we are beautiful, our cultures are beautiful, our lands are beautiful, our skin is beautiful.

Their time is up
“In 1944, Recy Taylor was a young wife and mother walking home from a church service she'd attended in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted by six armed white men, raped, and left blindfolded by the side of the road coming home from church. They threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone, but her story was reported to the NAACP where a young worker by the name of Rosa Parks became the lead investigator on her case and together they sought justice. But justice wasn't an option in the era of Jim Crow. The men who tried to destroy her were never persecuted. Recy Taylor died ten days ago, just shy of her 98th birthday. She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.

Their time is up. And I just hope—I just hope that Recy Taylor died knowing that her truth, like the truth of so many other women who were tormented in those years, and even now tormented, goes marching on. It was somewhere in Rosa Parks' heart almost 11 years later, when she made the decision to stay seated on that bus in Montgomery, and it's here with every woman who chooses to say, "Me too." And every man—every man who chooses to listen.” Oprah (hellava speech)

# Going forward

I believe that every experience we have had, bad or good are setups for where we are and where we are going to. So yes we have lost, we have handicaps, we are broken but these are part of us.
These life experiences are practice sessions for our future. That thing from your past that you brings you sadness or that you consider shameful will be used by God to create something new and amazing. Somebody out there may need to hear your story and learn from your experiences. Believe in your awesome.
I believe 2018 is going to be a great year despite the obstacles ahead.

Plan 2018
Looking at my #2017bestnine I could see the themes that flow through my work and the style. But it highlighted something new, I am comfortable with what I do, so it’s time to evolve and build on where I currently am.
So I guess now is a good time as any to start planning the revolution, well the planning is actually a goal setting exercise. Here are some I came up with for 2018;
1. Do more personal work, like a lot more cos in 2017 you slacked.
2. Travel more and keep your eyes open for stories while you are out there.
3. Be more socially media active and interactive, even though you hate it sometimes. Maybe more live streams.
4. Make 2 films before the end of the year, you know you’ve always wanted to.
5. Buy 2 new cameras, one for travel and the other a new main body, go on you deserve it.
6. Get out of the house more and interact more you lazy introvert.
7. Create at least one deeply honest and emotional project that you are scared of creating.
Ok I now need to sit with this and break it down. I guess the first step is to put down what you would like to do in the year to come and start from there.
Thank you to everyone who supports my work and collaborates with me. Looking forward to more creative projects in 2018. Have you created your goals for 2018, share some below.

You don’t have to do it perfectly but wholeheartedly.
Maybe we worry too much about perfection and miss the point of it all. Maybe it’s time to dive straight in with every fibre of our being. Yes it might not be perfect, but there is beauty in that imperfection, it might just be the best version of yourself.

# Live in spite of the past
We get so hung up on the past and baggage it brings. What I have found is that we need to acknowledge it, learn from it, and bury it. The past is the past, let it be just that. It’s time to move on and open up to new possibilities and new adventures.
As 2017 draws to a close, we step into the unknown of 2018 with hope and optimism and the thought that our pasts do not define us.

What’s the story?

Any good work of art needs a story, whether it’s a painting, a picture, sculpture or architecture they all need a story, it’s what gives it meaning and purpose. So how do you create your stories? Let’s talk about stories in artwork, do you think they are essential and how do you come up with yours? Or do you struggle with coming up with stories?
Leave comments below and let’s engage.

# “My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me. Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.” ~ David
This is a Psalm of David, who was a warrior in every sense; He had killed a giant, a lion, and a bear, so basically he was a badass. Yet he still had fears.
It is ok to have fears and it is ok to be afraid.
Chuck Swindoll wrote about attitude: “The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past … we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude … I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.” How is your attitude today? Are you walking in fear? Maybe it’s time to give that up. ‘A fearless girl’ an outtake from when I helped craft Anita Quansahs last lookbook. The embroidery work is from Anita.

Who do you believe you are
.
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Prov. 23:7). What does your heart tell you about who you are?
If a baby elephant is tied to a strong stake and can’t pull free, he has trained his mind to believe the same thing to be true even when he is much bigger and stronger. You can replace the strong stake with something much weaker, and the elephant will not pull free even though it is physically capable of doing so.
So who do you think you are? Our successes and our failures start in our minds.
