Last summer I started writing a poem about the devastating wildfires we were having in BC. The ominous smoke that sat in our city for weeks causing this strange , tired vibe. I recently came across it in my notebook... and started writing this song 🎶

Thank you @stevethorp for this beauty of a boathouse to sing in. Such sweet songwriting juju in this spot! ✨🙏🏼💦

This is Hereditary Chief Ernest Alfred, from the Nagmis, Lawit’sis and Mamalilikala Nations. I had the honour of visiting him last month on Swanson Island where he was involved in an occupation at the Marine Harvest salmon farm. He stayed there fighting to put a stop to open-net fish farming for almost 300 days.
Reconciliation needs to start by honouring the lands of our indigenous people. How can that be accomplished when we have so many toxins and diseases from foreign fish farms running through their territories?
Ernest spoke so passionately at the #hearthecall screening on Tuesday about the struggles of his people and the ongoing fight that sometimes feels hopeless. I admire this man so much and believe wholeheartedly in all the work he’s doing to bring back our wild salmon population.
