A world-class cultural venue and a prime example of sustainable best practice, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Athens, Greece, features a stunning 10,000m2 canopy of photovoltaic cells that provide shading and an estimated 2GWhrs of energy per annum – enough to power 650 homes. As the design lead consultant for the Elizabeth Quay bridge in Perth, Australia, we used parametric modelling and a curved form architectural solution to overcome a variety of design constraints. These included the range of heights required at different sections of the walkway to allow vessels to pass beneath it without compromising pedestrian access. The project has helped to revitalise central Perth, providing local residents with more opportunities to interact with Swan River. Our structural engineers devised a suitably ingenious solution for renovating London’s Design Museum, raising its 1,500 tonne roof 20m above ground level to a tolerance of just 5mm. This enabled the removal of the internal structural frame and the redevelopment of the gallery, tripling its size. Introducing one of the most sustainable buildings in Europe. The 21-storey HAUT tower in Amsterdam has become the first residential building in the Netherlands to be awarded a ‘BREAAM Outstanding’ certificate. It won the highest possible sustainability score as a result of its final design, which used a timber structure to save 2,500 tons of carbon. The tower, which is being constructed later this year, is set to be the tallest residential building in the country. Appointed to act as the independent engineer for the new passenger terminal at Zagreb International Airport in Croatia, we were responsible for tracking performance, quality and compliance of construction works over the lifetime of the project. We overcame sub-optimal site conditions and a range of local restrictions to improve passenger flow and create a new office building at London’s Cannon Street Station. We worked with architect Jürgen Mayer H on the award-winning Metropol Parasol, which has inspired a wave of regeneration in a Seville square, attracting tourists and new businesses. One of the largest timber structures ever built, it features a raised area for performances, a restaurant, and a balcony with panoramic views. A micro-laminated wood called Kerto was used for its 6 parasols, which also cover an archaeological site and viewing platform.

Our design for the Beijing Aquatics Center is inspired by the natural formation of soap bubbles, using geometry that’s highly repetitive and buildable, while appearing organic and random. Also known as the ‘Water Cube’, it’s one of the most exciting and dynamic sporting venues constructed for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Its façade was built using ethyl tetrofluoroethylene (ETFE), a material that weighs just 1% of glass and is a better thermal insulator, trapping and using 20% of incoming solar energy for heating.

The King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) is a 70,000m² energy and environmental research campus. We worked side by side with @ZahaHadidArchitects to develop the buildings’ form. They have been designed to “turn their back to the sun” to minimise solar gain, and are shaped to enclose shaded courtyards that are cooled by the prevailing desert winds. When Rio hosted the Olympic Games in 2016, the waterside Museu do Amanhã – Museum of Tomorrow – was a landmark of the marathon race. Its design lives up to its name thanks to our use of innovative structural and façade engineering, as well as our facilities management. The building has solar spines that move along the skylight to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Meanwhile technology is used to support art and science displays. Sacred Heart Cathedral of Kericho Diocese in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, North West of #Nairobi, is a unique place for worship.
Using local materials and skills, the Cathedral is designed to serve the community, and integrate seamlessly with its #landscape setting, in both aesthetic and functional terms.
One of the building's most striking features is the full length central #skylight which illuminates the interior with #natural light, drawing attention to the altar.
We provided multidisciplinary #engineering services, including specialist input on #seismic, #acoustics and #lighting design. The project team comprised expertise from Arup’s #London and #Botswana offices, working closely with the local delivery partners in Kenya.
Arup was awarded a highly commended in the 2017 Lighting Design Awards for the lighting design.

The first architectural design by the late Zaha Hadid in Hong Kong; the Innovation Tower’s delicate distortion, confined space and the need to meet multiple users’ requirements posed a challenge to our engineering teams. We used 3D modelling and BIM to help install the complex, evolving geometry of the building that houses the School of Design, various studios and labs, a museum and a public gallery, accommodating 1,700 students and 100 staff.
