‘Great Petition’ (2008) by artists’ Susan Hewitt and Penelope Lee is located just south of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Burston Reserve, Melbourne. The sculpture references the Monster Petition of 1891, which saw a collection of 30,000 signatures collected from Victorian women in an effort to gain the right to vote. The votes of paper were pasted to a fabric backing and rolled onto a cardboard spindle, creating a 260 metre long x 200 millimetres wide cultural artefact which takes three people three hours to unroll from one spoil to another. The sculpture was commissioned as a permanent acknowledgement to those who united to bring about change. #greatpetition #melbourne #suffrage #vote #petition #sculpture #publicart #melbourneart #change #burstonreserve #artiseverywhere #susanhewitt #penelopelee #stpatrickscathedral #monsterpetition #womenempowerment

Ronnie van Hout's Dayton (2014), an oversized sculpture of a seated humanoid robot, sits opposite the New Horizons building at Monash University's Clayton campus. Van Hout's sculpture encourages us to think about the increasing human-like nature of robots, the often robotic nature of student life and our intensifying reliance on technology. ‘Dayton' stands for 'Do As Your Told Or Not’ and the human element brought to the robot through the use of eyes and teeth, portray both the optimism of being a student and the anxiety that can also come with it.

Materials: aluminium, patinated bronze and steel
Location: Corner of Research Way & Rainforest Walk, Clayton campus, Monash University. #ronnievanhout #artiseverywhere #sculpture #publicart #robot #monashuniversity #melbourneart #art #dayton #students #humanoid #technology #optimism #anxiety #studentlife
