Let's talk passion projects. A lot of them get stuck in the backburner for weeks, months, even years -- because of a huge grocery list of fears: I'm not ready, maybe next year, I need to attend classes/become better, I need better equipment, I don't have time yet, not sure if it's gonna work, maybe I should do this first, etc et etc.
_
One thing that works for me, in an effort to sort of... downplay the fears and pressure of starting, is - instead of thinking of it as a huuuuge passion project with a huuuuge launch that I'm going to announce all over social media with a spectacular countdown and amaaazing graphics (and all the bongga works), I just tell myself, "I'm gonna do a little experiment."
_
And then I run a tiny, tiny, tiny, messy, first test-run of my experiment. Then, I tweak along the way depending on how it goes. So in my head, I get a lot less anxious, because I mean, it's just a little experiment, wouldn't hurt, right? ;)
_
(I know it's psychological, but this reframing works for me every single time!!!) Plus, because the experiments are small, the failures are also pretty micro. I can tell very early on if I'm on the right track, if I'm enjoying, or if I'm better off doing something else.

Let me know in the comments: what usually scares/keeps you from starting a passion project?

Guys, humor me - can we talk about systems? Working for yourself PLUS working from home can be a huge, overwhelming mess.
_
Last Friday (as you can see in the post-its above), I was trying to make sense of the flow of content + online platforms + audience + sales + finances in my business... and all the nitty-gritty tasks under them. (Hint: It's *a lot* of moving parts!) I was also compiling accounting reports from the past 12 weeks to get a more accurate sense of my capital consumption each month.
_
So I was just wondering... how do you guys do it?! Do you struggle with this, too?! What systems do you have in place so that you have a pulse on the BIG PICTURE in your business, plus, also making sure the daily wheels are turning and you are productive every day?
_
I'm still learning as I go, obviously, and over the past year, I've designed and have been using/tweaking my own spreadsheets and workflows, but I'd love to know what's working for you guys! Any particular schools of thought or systems or apps/software you use in terms of managing your biz?
_
One of the things that has helped me a lot is that I've made it a habit to always record my cash flow in YNAB every single Friday (that's my accounting day, and that's what I'm doing in this photo thus the serious face haha) - that way, I'm never spending money I don't have i.e. credit card debt!, or never letting my account hit dangerously low levels, and I'm always prepared for big expenses WEEKS in advance. Whew. *wipes sweat off brow* This whole 'pursuing your passion' thing is a rollercoaster ride, you guys.ย ๐Ÿ˜‚ย #stillwouldnttradeitforanything #PDBchallenge

Here's to more meaningful connections beyond hashtags & usernames! I first "met" these ladies thru the #daretoshareIGchallenge on @thepurposefulcreative - and now we're here โค๏ธ
.
So for this quarter, since I'm not traveling so much - I decided to prioritize meeting my students in person, in more intimate settings. It was WONDERFUL to be able to share wins (these ladies have been landing new clients, new collaborations, more exposure, going to China to talk to suppliers, among other amazing things) & screw-ups & fears & lessons learned & productivity tips with new friends! (Yep... we covered a lot of ground today ๐Ÿ˜‹)
.
PS. Whew - I have about 60 students in this particular class, and so I have about 8 more meetups to go! (My introvert self is both scared and excited, all at the same time ๐Ÿ˜‚) #PDBchallenge

Impromptu photobombing cutieย ๐Ÿ˜‚ย Okay, so, most of the time, I plan & organize things to the hilt (complete with spreadsheets & KPIs). But on some crazy days, I just WING IT & go with sudden ideas and run wild! i.e. Uploading my first-ish video on my YouTube channel (yes, gasp, I know). The link is in my bio - would love if you could go check it out. ๐Ÿ˜œ
.
It's a recording of a mini-session & live chat I had with some of my students over at @thepurposefulcreative. where we talk about how to get back on track & respark your goals when you've veered off-track. It definitely wasn't the perfect, HD, well-edited video I had imagined my first video to be, but hey... done is better than perfect, right? aka. Sometimes you just gotta tell your perfectionist twin in your brain to shut up โœ‹๐Ÿ’ย ๐Ÿ˜‹ย #PDBchallenge
.
PS. Let me know what you think! Should I do more videos?! What other videos should I do? Sound off in the comments!ย โค๏ธ

What I do now, I owe to hundreds of "silly" passion projects from the past. ;) PS. If you need help with starting your passion project, or getting more organized about it (productivity tips, scheduling techniques, spreadsheets) - click the link in my bio to join my #BraverGoals workshop!
.
Share in the comments below: What passion project are you working on now? Or if you haven't started - what do you want to do, and what's keeping you from just going for it? Would love to hear your thoughts (no judgment!). #PDBchallenge

My current home office situation. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐ŸŽ‰ Working from home is a huge test of willpower, but having a cute workspace with lots of light helps!
.
PS. I'm also a huge believer that when you design your systems and environments very very well - this means you just kinda follow a routine that's already built into your day - you cut the amount of willpower needed in half because you're just following routine (it eliminates decision fatigue as well)! This helps me A LOT so I can reserve that willpower and decision faculties for more important things in my day. (Although sometimes um... the naps still win) ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ #PDBchallenge #thepurposefulcreative

"Not sure if I should start my passion project yet cos I'm SUPER busy right now, as in swear, not sure if I can make time for it, besides, I'm still fixing pa my website & deciding on my final name..." << This makes a frequent appearance in my inbox, because a lot of students have come to me with this "reason" for not starting their passion project. I always throw them some tips & questions back though:
Tip 1: Put it in your calendar. Because - when are you ever not busy anyway? (Hint: Think about it. Life *always* finds sneaky ways to keep you busy... One busy week just blends into the next. So if you really, truly want to do something, you MAKE time for it, not find time.)
And:
Tip 2: Start before you're ready. I mean... How do you define 'ready'? I've learned this time and again - 'Ready' is an ever moving target. If you're not careful, it'll always keep moving away from you, and you will never get started. ๐Ÿ˜œ
.
(If you want more of my thoughts on taking quick action on your ideas, I talk all about it in episode 1 of @thepurposefulcreative podcast: how I launch passion project as quickly as I can - I only give myself a 2week runway to turn my idea into reality - as a way to test my conviction for it ๐Ÿ˜‹) Listen here: thepurposefulcreative.com/episode1 โค๏ธ

Reading Cheryl Strayed recently, & this reminded me of a very insightful reader who sent me a message a few weeks back, asking whether the "just do it" was a universal approach.
.
She said: "It certainly is easier for a privileged [Atenean/someone from a good school], since resources such as our expansive network are more accessible... Are there mantras other than "just do it"... for those whose realities simply won't do it for them."
.
I've been thinking a lot about that, too. It's not something I have a definitive answer to, but I replied to her & shared a bit about my experiences and insights from working in a social enterprise (@rags2richesinc), where it really *is* very hard to tell an artisan from Payatas to "just do it" -- when s/he doesn't have access to proper documentation, opportunities, connections, education, etc.
.
But the ones who succeed (not just in R2R, but in many other people I know) and transform their lives the most - were the ones who "just did it" within their constraints, and showed up and "just did it" every. single. day. - until those constraints loosened and expanded over time. It's definitely harder & slower moving work compared to people with better access... but that didn't keep these awesome people from playing the HELL out of the cards they were dealt.
.
So I think that "just do it" is a catchy and simple tagline that people resort to, because it's far too long and tedious to say its full underlying philosophy, which is: "Break down the big dream into smaller goals, acknowledge your constraints, treat them as an opportunity to be more resourceful and creative, then just do what you can today, no matter how small. Then show up and do it again tomorrow. Then do more & more each day until your constraints change and expand and evolve." ๐Ÿ˜‹ (See??? Not quite as hashtaggable as "just do it" right? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚)
.
Anyhoo, lots more thoughts about this... this would be a great @thepurposefulcreative podcast episode!! What do you think?ย โค๏ธ #essaysoninstagrambecauseiwantto ๐Ÿ˜‚ #PDBchallenge

Already dreaming about my next trip ๐Ÿ—บ One of the things that helps me pay for all these trips is that I always, always set aside a fixed minimum amount of money each month, and put it in my designated Travel Budget. Every month, without fail. ๐ŸŒ
.
That way, when a seat sale or international opportunity comes up, I'm not scrambling to find money nor maxing out my credit card nor borrowing from my parents - but I have existing money specifically set aside for that very purpose - traveling!
.
I also have another similar revolving fund called my Learning Budget, which is for enrolling in classes or signing up for conferences and events ๐Ÿค“
.
On better revenue months, I try and put in a little more than the minimum in each bucket. (and a little bit in my shopping bucket too, hehe) How do YOU keep track of your finances? PS. I have a super favorite finance tool - link is in my IG stories!! You'll get to see how I use it as well! #PDBchallenge

I told myself I'd reserve this skirt for special days, but I guess Monday is as special a day as any ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿ’ƒToday, I took big, scary, #adulting steps towards the direction of putting down more roots here in Manila - a move that I've been actively avoiding since 2015. ๐Ÿ™Š
.
But after 2 years of teeter-tottering between one continent to another - I just HAD to get it over with (as with many adulting things) ๐Ÿ˜† Here's to new starts, a crap-ton of documents, making decisions that are so big it makes you want to vomit, and just... freaking making the jump anyway. ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

PS. Say hello to my trapezius muscles

Monday ๐Ÿ™ The point, I think, is not to strive for 'normal' aka 'what everybody else has' -- or even for 'extraordinary' -- the point is to strive for... happy. โค๏ธ
.
A little snippet from this morning's journal inspired by this Cheryl Strayed book I'm reading. One of the biggest lessons I'm thankful to have learned in the past year (so hopefully I don't have to struggle with regrets when I get to 35). So. Are you happy? ๐Ÿ˜˜
