Last Saturday, I went to the MIBF to support my author friends - and one of them is a student in my #BraverGoals goal-setting/project management e-course! @cindywongdelacruz, author of The Meatball Club (a mystery series!) had been telling me that the course has been pivotal in helping her get this book out and shipped into the world. She shares her Braver Goals experience below:
.
"Before the #BraverGoals e-course, I would simply write my novels without any particular time frame, which means no target release date and no marketing done until the book is finished. The disadvantage of my old habits is: it will take me at least six months to a year to release a book, and despite all the hard work, the chances of reaching people to buy my book are low.
.
Because of the workbook, I learned how to focus my energy on one big or main goal (writing a book) then allocate a few hours a week to a maximum of three smaller goals (e.g. marketing the book, the process, etc.) that are easy to achieve. That way, I wouldn't get confused on what really matters to me.
.
The workbook helped me manage my schedule & boosted my productivity, which is essential especially since I also have a day job and writing in the early morning or late in the evening is hard. Writing requires an enormous amount of discipline, and I gained it because of the class!
.
My main goal when I started the #BraverGoals was to write my first mystery book entitled The Meatball Club within three months, hoping to launch it at the 38th Manila International Book Fair... and I DID!" 🌠🎉
.
I loooove reading my students' wins. Makes me so kilig! I've had over 300 students in my e-course, but this feeling never gets old ❤️ I still get inexplicably thrilled whenever students really implement & report back their results 🌠 To my BG fam, what's YOUR Braver Goals story?

Missing the quiet of Siargao. 🏝️ Have you ever contemplated just packing up your life & moving to an island? But in the meantime... How do I recreate island living in this crazy city?

Pilipinas kong mahal. 🇵🇭
If I can get viscerally angry at Uber/Grab's suspension, then I am mad - real mad - at what's happening right now. 💔 One of my goals this weekend is to think & discuss with my most trusted friends about how we can be part of the fight for justice & vigilance. For my newer readers, you may not know this, but in my past life, I used to work for the Senate of the Philippines - for 3 very passionate years, in fact. And when I was there, I genuinely thought I had already seen the worst of these tough & heartbreaking & soul-shattering injustices. Well. I was wrong. 💔
.
We have to stay vigilant, friends. Little by little, certain freedoms are already being taken away from us (if you're not following the news closely, it's time you did - try and find a not-so-emotionally-charged source of news if, like me, reading the news stresses you out).
.
It *will* affect all of us - not just the people you see on the news. Your job. Your business (hey there, fellow boss ladies). Your freedom. I've heard from some people here on Instagram, sharing stories about how their direct family members were wrongly arrested, extorted, even killed by police. People they know. People I know.
.
I know some people get dyahe when reading about these things on social media - and would rather see pretty photos. But silence is not just a privilege - silence *is* injustice. We need to start breaking into the discomfort of speaking up & engaging in dialogue. I know it's stressful to do so, but talk current events with your friends. Don't just rant (or engage w/ trolls); REALLY discuss. We have to stretch, guys: Stretch in the direction of informed discussion - & as hard as it is to do right now, in the direction of hope.
.
PS. Email your senators & congressmen asking them about their stand on human rights. And ask that they represent you, their constituent, during the upcoming bicam hearing for the budget. It's not over yet! You might think 1 email won't matter, but if we all do it, they can't ignore it. They're obligated to reply. Just make sure your email is still respectful! #PDBchallenge
.
PPS. What's your biggest struggle w/ reading or discussing news with others?

Wherever you go, bring your own sunshine 🌻🌻🌻 PS. Who's game for another creative escape + workshop with @shopseektheuniq in 2018 (remember when I taught a design thinking workshop in Morocco this year?) -- what country would you want to escape to with us next? Should we do India or Mexico? 😉 Vote in the comments below!

The best way to capture moments—is to pay attention ✨ (Practicing more #mindfulness this month by limiting my phone use... Any tips/apps/hacks for me?)

Yesterday, I did my August review: this is a #BraverGoals habit that I share with my students - every end of the month, we answer a page in our workbook, to help us keep track of how we're progressing on our goals (personal, career, finance, etc), and then we plan for what goal to focus on for the next month! It's like having your own little progress tracker FOR YOUR WHOLE LIFE 😋
.
I used to do this practice on my own for many years (on a spreadsheet, haha), and this habit has really helped me be more mindful about my growth as a creative, as a leader, as a human being -- pausing to review my growth every end of the month & purposefully planning the next, instead of just bulldozing through the year & one month blurring into the next.
.
And this year, I turned it into a printable workbook for the students in my course. It really makes me so giddy to see that I'm now able to share this little ritual with over 200 students not just in the Philippines, but different countries all over the world! ♥️ Makes my teacher-heart so happy. Growth is best shared, after all.
.
What goals are YOU focusing on for the last stretch of 2017? #PDBchallenge

Self Love Club ❤️ If there's anything I've learned in August... you *have* to be kind to yourself first. I always thought self-love was only about exercise & diet - but now I realize it's also about changing the way you talk to yourself.
.
A few months back, @gelibalcruz challenged me through one of her posts — to look in the mirror everyday and find at least ONE thing I like about myself. It was such a tiny thing, but it was hard — I felt like I had to undo years & years of unconscious programming! I don't know about you, but I think we've just been so used to looking in the mirror & automatically zeroing in on the things we wish we could change about ourselves: I wish I had ___, I wish I didn't have ___ 🤷
.
So I'm passing on the challenge to you! ✨ How are you going to be kinder to yourself this month? In the time of Instagram & the sheer accessibility of comparing yourself to others, how do you practice self-love? #PDBchallenge
.
PS. I used to feel REALLY, really bad about the size of my thighs, and people used to tease me about them all the time (especially in college when we had to wear short skirts & perform in front of 10,000 people in Araneta & everybody else had skinny legs), but now I just proudly call them Beyonce thighs & workout to keep 'em tight. 👯😘 #PataTeam

Feeling incredibly recharged from our team trip to Siargao. August was my self-care month - and it wasn't just about pressing pause because I was tired: it was about really taking care of myself: mind+body+spirit.
.
There were 3 things I committed to this August: Meditating every single day, working out & getting stronger, and reading a looooong list of books on my Kindle. Mind+body+spirit. Then, I capped it off with a 5-day trip to an island, sans laptop, sans email-checking. BEST SELF-CARE MONTH EVER. I feel amazing.
.
And now I'm back - EXCITED for the first of Monday of September, raring to get back to work! (If not a little hungover from the beauty that is Siargao, wish I could just work from there!!!) Curious: How do YOU practice self-care? Do you have any regular routines; or do you sprint for a period of time, then take a long break? #PDBchallenge
.
PS. Tip: Don't wait til you're burnt out completely (or sick) until you press pause!! Also - stay active! Exercise! Most underrated productivity tip ever 💪🏽

I ate a total of one healthy shaka bowl... and it was all downhill from there. 🤷 This photo was obviously taken on Day 1, before all the megarice bowls & freaktons of fresh seafood & grilled *EVERYTHING* (& biko! & sago!)
.
*I mean, let's face it - you can't beat island inihaw. #wheninsiargao

Head over heels in love with this place. #Siargao
.
What was meant to be just a chill, relaxed week ended up - well, yeah, very chill and relaxed - but also a trip where I faced many of my fears. 😋 I jumped off this diving platform (not once, but twice!), swam and snorkeled in the open sea without a life vest or floaty (I'm deathly afraid of water & I've never done it before), and finally managed to paddle out on my own while surfing. 🌊
.
Back in the big city: your every move should be timed, scheduled, strategic, calculated, aggressive - you can't afford to be anything less. You're like a string pulled taut, each stressor & deadline (and each hour spent in traffic!!) taking you closer and closer to your snapping point.
.
But in the face of this *amazing* beauty of an island, all you can do is throw your perfect little itinerary into the wind, shed all your city-manufactured wants & 'needs' & 'shoulds' - plop down on the sand barefooted, and pull out a whole deck of Yes cards instead. ♥️♠️♦️♣️
.
Fun? Yes.
Adventure? Yes.
Fear? Yes.
Doing it anyway?
Hell. Freaking. Yes.
.
(All I can say is: The Siargao magic is real, you guys. 🌊✨) #Pdbchallenge
.
PS. This was taken with my phone camera 😱 #HuaweiMate9PH

Today: A rekindled awareness for the majestic beauty of nature, the urgent need to protect it, how much trash we humans produce and consume and throw away, and ultimately - questioning why I'm based in Manila, when living in the Philippines means the best of Mother Earth is *this* accessible to me. 🤷🌊 #neverwanttoleave
