My thoughts have been consumed with the Vegas shooting, shooting on Mass St. in Lawrence, and others recent tragedies. I don't pretend to know all the answers, but I have personally lost loved ones and acquaintances to gun violence. I don't know the changes that need to be made, but we have elected leaders who can figure it out. Is it finally enough, with the worst mass shooting in American history, to see meaningful change? Have enough victims been buried? Have we had enough tragedy?
People will ALWAYS find a way to get ahold of guns if that's what they want. We cant control anyone's decision making. But what we can control is the ease at which that task is accomplished and potentially create some barriers to malicious acts of murder. Stephen Paddock had over ten "rifles" in his room. There has been no official release of the details of these weapons, and controversy over whether they were semi-automatic or fully automatic. The exact make, model, and legality of the weapons are not the point. The point is that if Stephen Paddock had wanted to stockpile an arsenal of legal weapons to commit mass murder with, it would have been pretty easy to do.
Here in Germany, many of my teammates have never even seen a gun. It is a different culture, but I am extraordinarily less likely to be shot here than in the United States. This past week in the US, two of my high school classmates were shot. Two years ago, my high school boyfriend was shot. Five years ago, an alumni of my university was shot on her way to our alumni match. Gun violence is an epidemic.
I have hope and faith that it is finally enough, that meaningful change will be made. And i will pray for the victims of senseless violence, but I will also do my part to push for change. I will email my Representatives and Senators to demand change.
However you feel about the situation at hand or about gun control, I at least hope you take some time to educate yourself about the issues. In this way, you can fully form your own opinion. Always read multiple sources and be conscious of writers/publications own biases. God bless ❤️ #inktober #legislateforvegas
