Animal Planet  Welcome to the official Instagram of Animal Planet!

This bull moose lives in Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge in Wyoming. For moose, antler size is everything. The more symmetrical and the larger the antlers, the healthier the male (AKA bull) — and female moose aren’t afraid to be selective based on antler size and shape. Females, or cows, typically go for bulls with larger, more proportionate antlers when choosing a mate. Who doesn’t love a healthy partner?! 📸: Tom Koerner/USFWS

The roseate spoonbill (AKA the Ajaja) is a master at digging through mud for crustaceans and other small animals. With its specialized spoon-shaped bill, it can sift through the water to find exactly what it wants to dine on. These birds build their nests in shrubs or mangrove trees and lay two to five eggs at a time, identifiable by their brown and white markings. 📸: Mike Carlo/USFWS

This bison, in the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, actually looks incredibly cuddly. Don’t be fooled by their friendly appearance, though, they have horns grown specifically for self defense. These herbivores spend most of their time grazing, choosing one spot to hang out in for about two hours before moving to the next. 📸: Kayt Jonsson/USFWS

This tiny red-headed woodpecker is in Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. These red-feathered beauties spare nothing when hunger strikes. They’re omnivores, so they’ll eat anything from seeds to insects, and if the craving strikes, even the eggs of other birds. Ruthless! 📸: Mike Carlo/USFWS

This is one spunky bighorn sheep in Kofa National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona! The sheep gets its name from, you guessed it, its large horns. Even though they live in a herd, there is no dominance hierarchy, so they have no leader. Males (AKA rams) will compete with each other over a female, or ew, but the “winner” of the fight doesn’t have social dominance over the “loser.” They just go their separate ways. 📸: USFWS

These adorable red fox kits live in a National Wildlife Refuge in Delaware. They’re the largest of the fox species and one of the most wildly distributed in the northern hemisphere. Red foxes have close kinship ties and can always be found in pairs, like these siblings. Catch more amazing refuge stories on Into Alaska TONIGHT at 9P on Animal Planet! 📸: Jennifer Cross/USFWS

Peacock | With its extravagant plumage and piercing calls, the iconic peacock is sure to be noticed in any environment. The function of this bird’s fantastic plumage is actually widely up for debate. Theories range from being a sign of fitness to it being a way to trick peahens into thinking they’re covered in blueberries. No matter what the theory, we can all agree that they’re beautiful!

Hyacinth Macaw | From tip to tail, macaws average 3.3 ft, making it the largest of all parrots. These blue birds have very strong beaks to break down the kernels of hard nuts and seeds. Their bony, smooth, dry tongues give them quite the advantage as well, allowing this bird to effectively tap into fruits.

Hoopoe | Look at that stunning crown of feathers! Hoopoes are monogamous, territorial birds who take their role as parents seriously. They have a special gland that creates a foul-smelling liquid (think rotting meat!), which is a perfect defense against predators.

Quetzal | Like true millennials, quetzals love avocados and are picky about which ones they eat. These iridescent birds will hover in the air as they selectively pick which fruit they desire, near the ends of tree branches. Even though adults eat a fruit-based diet, chicks prefer insects like wasps or ants.
