A movement is only as great as the people that make up the foundation. A belief, only as strong as the those that sacrifice for it.
.
The dogs we rescued this year from Yulin, they are slowly finding their way. For some, they are learning how to walk again. For others, understanding that no one will ever hurt them.
.
Maybe they are empty, because of the pieces we leave behind. Maybe they get second chances - finding who they are in the hands of someone else.
.
At the end of the day, it is the ones you cannot save that you remember. The dog that died there in your arms. The blood that fell, like tears crashing into the Earth like they were stars.
.
I remember...
.
(Thank you Suki Su, Animal Hope and Wellness China, for taking such good care of our children.
.
The foundation, it is only as strong as the lives that sacrifice for it. The movement, only as great as those that believe in it.)

And I will never understand, the things people do to animals. The cruelty that is seen. The things as human beings, we do to other species.
.
Rescued this year from Yulin, they cut the toes off her feet.
.
It is amazing, how far the suffering come in such a short time. She is now fully recovered, learning how to live her life again. Next month when I make my sixteenth trip to Asia, I will bring her home with me back to the foundation.

There has been so much to do, and so many lives that need attending - that it has been hard to write and find time to give updates.
.
Rescue is not just about saving lives, or pulling them out of slaughterhouses. It is a commitment. A promise that finds no end until the surviving are adopted.
.
Yulin is not just a single day for them, the struggle is continuous. Most are taken from their families. Beat, smashed, then thrown into cages.
.
While we were ready this year for Yulin, no one in the end can fully be ready. Every truck you stop, every slaughterhouse you empty - the victims are always different.
.
Since Yulin came and went, the number of dying is close to two hundred (including those that were dead on arrival). Even with the best in care, you cannot change the future. Some of the surviving had all their legs amputated. One of their paws, severed and left on the floor of the truck we unloaded.
.
Yesterday a dog we liberated that seemed fully healthy, caught distemper - died in our arms. We watched as he stopped breathing. As his heart beat on for another moment. Was he dead already, or was it his soul trying make peace as he left the Earth?

It is amazing, the will of the living to survive. To think of what they have been through. The desperation. The fear they feel in the moment before they die.
.
As the slaughterhouse was emptied and dogs killed to meet supply - she was one of four we rescued.
.
This morning as I took her for a walk, we sat there along a riverside. I wondered if she remembered me. Wondered if she knew she was safe.
.
While it took her time to trust, in the end she found a place to lay. Let my hand touch her face. I hope in time you find your way, and that somehow you forget the pain.

This coming Saturday I will be in San Francisco, attending the March to Close All Slaughterhouses. While I know for a fact the exploitation of animals will never end. I am attending this demonstration with the hopes that my voice can be the words of the forgotten.
.
Even though I mostly rescue dogs, I am a believer of life, and an ethical vegan. I make a daily choice not to consume animals, for one reason only - because that single choice itself saves lives.
.
My transition to becoming vegan, it did not happen over night. I had been rescuing dogs for a long time. It was not until I started going undercover into slaughterhouses witnessing them being tortured alive, that I made the connection.
.
My family is not vegan. I was not born vegan. But in the words of my close friend Tony Kanal, I will die a Vegan.
.
Saturday July 22nd, The March to Close All Slaughterhouses. Not because it will ever end, but because the world I long to see, is one of peace and compassion.

And I wonder who they are. For the heart that is broken. For the life that died there in your arms.
.
It is hard to think of those that never get a chance. Those you lose because all you can do is your best. Hard to think about their suffering. To look at your past, and the cage that stood behind.
.
Freedom is such a gift, and I think most of us forget that. The right to choose what you want. The will in your hand to hold what you love.
.
Rescued this year from Yulin, he is the example of determination. After he was pulled off the truck, we drove him to emergency. He survived open wounds, and three intensive care surgeries.
.
Like the Greek god of the Sun Apollo, healer and protector of the dying. May you find your second chance, and the first beginning at life.

While we were in China, one of the great pleasures we had was taking the letters we collected, to the Communist Party Secretary of Yulin Mo Gong Ming.
.
Earlier in the year we asked children to write, to be a voice for those without words. We collected a little over two thousand letters from kids all over the world. Australia. Japan. Denmark. Sweden. The United Kingdom. India. Brazil. Canada. Korea. The Philippines. And China.
.
Even though it took some convincing, the government agreed to accept the letters on behalf of the children. It was the only moment we had this year at Yulin that was beautiful.
.
In the end it probably did not do a thing. Yulin still came and went. With more dogs being massacred this year then last.
.
I do not know what freedom means. I do not even know if there is hope. But I do know that compassion exists. I see it when my children tell me that they love me. And in the words of those that took the time, to tell the dying they mattered.
.
Tonight I leave back on my 15th trip, to help the dogs we liberated at Yulin. To meet with government. And to try to find a way to rescue myself. 💔

Update on Rescue 7/06:
.
The truck intercepted and stopped in Hunan by Animal Hope and Wellness and activists the other day. All the dogs and cats were liberated and taken to a quarantine facility within the province.
.
Once there, activist groups began fighting over the rescue - wanting to take claim of the animals so they could raise donations. Because things became heated, I asked our vets, Suki Su, and her uncle to leave.
.
Funny how the vultures pick the carcass. How groups who had no involvement, now claim they did the intercept and were part of the rescue. In the end, we have so many animals of our own to care for. Hopefully these dogs and cats find the attention they need, and live to see the day they are adopted.
.
My thanks goes directly to our vet Mr Chen Liang, who first spotted the truck, and followed the driver until the intercept was made. To Suki Su, her uncle, and the police and activists who helped to get the transport released - these dogs and cats are free because of you.
.
Next week I leave back to China on my 15th trip. To work to shut down a slaughterhouse within the province. And unveil the education center in Changsha we have been constructing.
.

He died in my arms.
.
After he was skinned alive. He crawled on the floor, searched for a place he could die. I picked him up, looked into his eyes. The lashes on his face - the only reason I knew you were still alive.
.
It is like, how do you stop that? How are there words big enough to speak against that?
.
At night I punish myself. Cut my wrist until I cannot stand. And I think, why couldn't I save you from that. The man who liberates the child from the wreak. The mother who dives into the ocean to rescue her kid. All I was - tears I cried that you could not shed.
.
I am sorry. 💔

A truck carrying 700 to 800 dogs and cats was spotted by our volunteer vet who was on his way to our shelter. Within 5 hours - Animal Hope and Wellness, Hunan activists, and local police intercepted the truck at a gas station.
.
The quarantine department who works with our shelter, and the Changsha Animal Protection Organization are present. Currently we are working to sign an agreement, attempting to get the dogs and cats released into our custody.
.
This is the first time that our rescue has been supported by local police.
.
Suki Su, and her uncle Zoe Mcneil are there negotiating, waiting to transfer the dogs and cats. This truck was heading to Yulin, based on testimony by the driver.

Will they ever find freedom? Do second chances really exist?
.
There is so much divide in the movement. So much hate when in the end, all anyone wants to do is make a difference. It is the vegans that attack other vegans. The animal rescuers, that attack those doing the rescuing.
.
People look at my past, and they judge me on where I have been. It is the darkness that teaches us light exists. The suffering we breathe, that allows us to know there is love.
.
No animal should be abused. No human being exploited. No cow shot in the head. No dog skinned alive and hung.
.
Remember who it is that we fight for. The blood of the dying that spills into the Earth. The tears of the tortured, that in the end is never heard.
.
"The Independence."
.
(While in Yulin, we liberated a pig that was being sold for slaughter.
.
He lives at our shelter in China, and will be a part of our education program where we will teach children the importance of animals. And that it is compassion we need to save the world.)

This past trip we spent our time documenting Yulin, and intercepting trucks in an effort to cut supply to the festival. While we failed at stopping all the transports we targeted. We successfully intercepted four, and took an additional 188 dogs from a slaughterhouse.
.
In total we rescued 858 dogs, 6 cats, 2 paguma larvata, 1 marmot, and a pig we named Veganoso.
.
Out of all the animals we saved, one of the cats we liberated passed away. And approximately 71 dogs have died since we began rescuing this Yulin. Currently the number of sick and injured is over 500, and we are doing the best we can to manage and treat those that are suffering.
.
To the people that make the change we see possible, we owe you so much. To Ms Suki Su, Animal Hope and Wellness China - my heart is with you. To everyone who has supported and kept us in their prayers, no words can begin to describe our gratitude.
.
To Ms Judy Chen, who does so much for our foundation and the dogs we pull out of darkness, you are their hero.
.
And to the dog that was skinned alive - that I picked up dying there from the Earth. I am sorry we could not save you. Sorry that the blood you bled, and the pieces you shattered into the dirt, that in the end you died in torment.
.
All I can hope is in your final breath, that you knew someone came. That you knew we tried to save you.
