I was in the east coast of Iwate prefecture, Japan, this summer and visited the town of Rikuzentakata. During the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the resulting tsunami had reduced much of the town into nothing, with over a thousand casualties.
By the coast of the town, there once stood a forest of 70,000 trees and all were wiped out except for one. The miracle pine. Perhaps this is the kind of symbolism we should take in our lives, in these times or all the time. We should always take in adversity but never let it take us.
