Kumamoto Castle (熊本城 Kumamoto-jō?) is a hilltop Japanese castle located in Chūō-ku, Kumamoto in Kumamoto Prefecture. It was a large and well fortified castle. The castle keep (天守閣 tenshukaku?) is a concrete reconstruction built in 1960, but several ancillary wooden buildings remain of the original castle. Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the three premier castles in Japan, along with Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle. Thirteen structures in the castle complex are designated Important Cultural Property. #kumamoto #kumamotocastle #japan @instagramjapan @japanigram @japantravelphoto @natgeotravel #historical #ancientknowledge #ancienthistory #japanculture @japantravelphoto

A team of #archaeologists has #discovered a #giant 3,000-year-old #statue thought to depict #Ramses II, in what the #Egyptian Ministry of #Antiquities is describing as "one of [its] most important #archaeological #discoveries." #Archaeologists from #Egypt and #Germany began removing the #quartzite statue -- estimated to stand 30 feet tall -- from the ground in #Matariya, greater #Cairo, in front of state representatives and media crews Thursday.

The find comes at the end of a dig that began in 2012, says Dietrich Raue from the #University of #Leipzig, who heads the German team of archaeologists involved in the excavation. #historical #ancientknowledge #ancienthistory

Experts have discovered a third structure within the #Kukulkan #pyramid in eastern #Mexico, revealing that it was built like a “Russian nesting doll”, experts said on Wednesday.

A 10-metre-tall pyramid was found within another 20metre structure, which itself is enveloped by the 30-metre exterior visible at the #Maya #archeological complex known as #ChichenItza in #Yucatán state.

The smallest pyramid was built between the years 550 and 800, engineers and anthropologists said. The middle structure had already been discovered in the 1930s and dates back to the years 800-1000, while the largest one was finished between 1050 and 1300.

The discovery suggests that the pyramid, also known as El Castillo (The Castle), was built in three phases. “It’s like a Russian nesting doll. Under the large one we get another and another,” said René Chávez Seguro, project chief and geophysics expert.

#Structures were built on top of each other for various reasons, including deterioration or the arrival of new leadership, said Denisse Argote, expert at the #National #Anthropology and #History #Institute. #ancienthistory #ancientknowledge #mayan #pyramids #culture #historical #unesco

Aso has a fairly large caldera (25 kilometres (16 miles) north-south and 18 km (11 mi) east-west) with a circumference of around 120 km (75 mi), although sources vary on the exact distance. #mtaso #volcano #volcanonationalpark #ancienthistory #ancientworld #ancientknowledge #japan #japanese @japan_of_insta @instagramjapan @japan_gram #traveling

In the 1980s, local divers discovered a striking underwater rock formation off the southernmost point of the island. This so-called Yonaguni Pyramid has staircase-like terraces with flat sides and sharp corners.
In 1985, Kihachiro Aratake, a diver from Japan, was diving in the waters off the Southern shore of Yonaguni island and discovered something unusual. Upon inspection, it appeared to be a man-made, terraced structure. Believing he had discovered a sunken city, Aratake announced his discovery, but there was not much interest. Later, in 1996, Professor Masaaki Kimura , a professor at the University of the Ryukyus, began to survey the structure. While Kimura maintains that the site is evidence for an advanced prehistoric civilization, others argued that the structure was the result of natural phenomena. Research in the ensuing years has arrived at a consensus that the structure is indeed a man made monolith carved from a natural formation.
The sea off Yonaguni is a popular diving location during the winter months due to its large population of hammerhead sharks. In 1987, while looking for a good place to observe the sharks, Kihachiro Aratake, a director of the Yonaguni-Cho Tourism Association, noticed some singular seabed formations resembling architectonic structures. Shortly there after, a group of scientists directed by Masaaki Kimura of the University of the Ryukyus visited the formations. Kimura is a strong advocate of the view that the formations are manmade
The formation has since become a relatively popular attraction for divers, in spite of the strong currents. In 1997, Japanese industrialist Yasuo Watanabe sponsored an informal expedition comprising writers John Anthony West and Graham Hancock, photographer Santha Faiia, geologist Robert Schoch, a few sport divers and instructors, and a shooting crew for British Channel 4 and Discovery Channel. Another notable visitor was freediver Jacques Mayol, who wrote a book on his dives at Yonaguni. A plaque in his honor was fixed to the undersea formations after his suicide in 2001. #yonagunipyramid #ancientjapanese #ancientworld #discovery #history #ruins #instagram #instadaily #ancientknowledge

The Yonaguni Monument (Japanese: 与那国島海底地形 Hepburn: Yonaguni-jima Kaitei Chikei?, lit. "Yonaguni Island Submarine Topography"), also known as "Yonaguni (Island) Submarine Ruins" (与那国(島)海底遺跡 Yonaguni(-jima) Kaitei Iseki), is a submerged rock formation off the coast of #Yonaguni, the southernmost of the #RyukyuIslands, in #Japan.

#MasaakiKimura, Professor Emeritus from the Faculty of Science at the University of the Ryukyus claims that the formations are man-made stepped monoliths. His ideas are disputed and there is debate about whether the site is completely natural, a natural site that has been modified or a man-made artefact. It is said to be dated back to 10,000 years to be the oldest know man made structure in the world. Neither the #Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, nor the government of #Okinawa Prefecture recognise the features as important cultural artefacts and neither government agency has carried out research or preservation work on the site.

What appears to be an ancient Roman sword has been found off the East Coast of Canada, but it is just one of several indications that Romans may have been there around the 2nd century or earlier. That’s at least 800 years before the Vikings landed, which is currently believed to be the first contact between the Old World and the New World.
The sword was discovered off the coast of Oak Island, Nova Scotia, during investigations into local lore of treasure buried on the island, conducted as part of the immensely popular History Channel show, “The Curse of Oak Island.” #ancient #history #oakisland #moneypit #ancientrome #ancienthistory #historygeek #romanempire #roman #discovery #ancientworld
