The size of the Coulter pine cones (also called the big-cone pine or Pinus coulteri) is larger than life or at least larger than my size 7.5 shoe.
This tree is a native of the coastal mountains of Southern California and northern Baja California (Mexico). Isolated groves are found as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area in Mt. Diablo State Park and Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. The species is named after Thomas Coulter, an Irish botanist and physician.
The Coulter pine produces the heaviest cone of any pine tree.
When fresh, they can weight up to 11lbs - giving this tree the nickname of "the widow maker".
