Yayoi Kusama’s “Yellow Pumpkin” was one of the first sculptures installed by the Benesse Art Site Naoshima for their Open Air ‘94 Out of Bounds outdoor exhibition program. I watched people from Japan and many other countries gather to have their moment with this iconic sculpture. Chatting, taking photographs of each other, enjoying the amazing view and chilly weather. It was a joyful scene. Since 2006, her “Red Pumpkin” greets everyone at Miyanoura Port. In the US, you can see her “High Heels for Going to Heaven” at SFO Museum at the San Francisco airport (@sfomuseum). Look for a few posts from me later about the “art islands” with different links. Today, check out more about the artist who created these iconic works and the documentary about her life: https://tinyurl.com/PAPC27 -RP #kusama #benessehousemuseum #panpals #publicartpostcard

Head over to ARTSblog today and check out the latest installment in our monthly series exploring common themes across the public art projects selected for the 2018 Public Art Network Year in Review. This month’s post looks at site-responsive projects, a hallmark of public art wherein the artist commits to a creative investigation of a site—geography, locality, topography, community, and history—to inform the work and tell a story. #PANYIR #publicart

Continuing our Portland adventure, Kelly Pajek (@kpajek) and I met up with Kristin Calhoun (@kristinpdx) and Peggy Kendellen. Stops included a trip to see “The Future Stands Still But We Move In Infinite Space” by artist Joe Thurston (@sitespecificwork), commissioned by @raccpdx and the Urban Renaissance Group for SRG’s Portland office. At one end of the line of 38 mirror boxes, the artist orients you with a map of the place you are standing. As you walk along, the views become more distant: North America, earth, and finally the galaxy where you are immersed in infinity as well as the size of the glass. Perhaps thanks to this project, which reminds you of your small place in the universe, we took plenty of time to “benchmark” the hat museum, pumpkin regatta, and eat lots of good food. Kelly Pajek (@kpajek) I adventured to Portland, where we visited with Dawndae Hamilton at Bulls Eye Glass @bullseyeglass. She gave us a VIP tour, including the workshops and seeing a vibrant work in progress for the Multnomah County Courthouse by artist Lynn Basa (@lynn.basa), commissioned by @raccpdx. So grateful to meet some of the fabricators who make the magic happen! Read more about the project here: tinyurl.com/papc25 -RP #publicartpostcard #PANPALS

Thank you @derbymuseum for hosting our Private Sector Council during this week’s winter meeting in Louisville! Our #artsandbiz field leaders were pretty excited to be on the grounds of @churchilldowns, recognized at last year's #BCA10 as a top business supporting the arts in America. 🐎 🖼

Meet the newest member of the #AFTAstaff! Peter joins us as the Director of Federal Affairs, and will be working to develop and promote the federal legislative agenda of Americans for the Arts to Congress and the Administration. If you're planning to attend the National Arts Action Summit in March, you'll see Peter around and learn more about his #artsadvocacy work with us. Help us welcome Peter to the family! #aftafirstday

We're honored and excited to accept the 2018 MobileWebAward for Outstanding Achievement in Mobile Development for our new Arts + Social Impact Explorer, which debuted last summer at #AFTACON and officially launched in October. The Explorer is a free online tool that helps all of us see and show the connections that exist at the intersection of the Arts and various parts of our community—like healthcare, the military, social justice, faith, and so much more. You can take the Explorer for a spin at americansforthearts.org/socialimpact. Thank you to the Web Marketing Association for our third (!) MobileWebAward honor in the past five years. 🥇 #socialimpact #arts #artsand

We're kicking off a monthly blog series exploring common themes across the public art projects selected for the 2018 Public Art Network Year in Review. Many of the 2018 honorees addressed issues at the forefront of current political discourse — particularly, how history and culture has not represented race, gender, sexuality, and class with fairness. Six of those projects uniquely addressed the issue of underrepresented histories. Read more about these public artworks today on ARTSblog at blog.americansforthearts.org. #PANYIR #publicart

In 2004, everyone was talking about Central Library in Seattle designed by Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Prince-Ramus of OMA/LMN and the innovative commissions by the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture (@seaofficeofarts). I visited in 2005 and fell in love. On this trip, I set aside time to revisit the building and the artworks. Still in love! The art collection now includes projects by artists in residence at the library since the building opened as well as artworks relocated from the older Central Library. Projects: Ann Hamilton’s “LEW FLOOR,” Tony Oursler’s (@tonyoursler) video installation “Braincast,” Lynne Yamamoto’s (@quietpineapple) “Of Memory,” Mandy Greer’s (@mandymandygreer) “Babe” and “The Phoenix Fairy,” George Tsutakowa’s “Fountain of Wisdom,” James Fitzgerald and Margaret Thompson’s “Northwest Screen,” and George Legrady‘s (@georgelegrady) “Making Visible the Invisible: What the Community is Reading.” For more: tinyurl.com/PAPC24 -RP #publicartpostcard #PANPALS #GeorgeTsutakowa #annhamilton #jamesfitzgerald #margaretthompson #seattlecentrallibrary
