American Library Association  The world's oldest and largest library association.

#FlashbackFriday to ALA President Jim Neal’s visit to @RepJerryNadler’s D.C. office last week! Jim asked Rep. Nadler to #FundLibraries in #NY10 and ALA’s position on several copyright bills that are now in play. Thanks for your advocacy, Jim!

Today's #tourdelibrary is also a #tbt! We sent a few of the Washington Office interns to visit the Commerce Research Library at the Department of Commerce.
The library is housed in the Herbert C Hoover Building, and it's collection contains business, trade, economic, and legal materials, just to name a few. Their reading room is open to bureau staff, and is often used for events or as a "home away from home" for staff that need a quiet work space. It is also open to the public, but you will need to have an appointment and a valid research need in order to do so.

Today is our make-or-break day in the House to #FundLibraries. We need to get more Representatives to sign the LSTA and IAL letters. Have you checked to make sure your Rep has signed? https://t.co/0rodf1jTw4

Go, Pennsylvannia Library Association! Check out this great letter urging PA Reps to #FundLibraries. PA received $5.4 million last year for "broadband & technology services, early learning services, summer learning, online access to rare PA collections, & adult services." ALA.org/takeaction

The collection at the Department of the Interior includes books and publications related to the work of the agency (including wildlife conservation, forest and range management, endangered species, earth science, etc). They also provide access to journals, electronic databases, and other resources. Their rare book collection includes titles published in the 19th century and earlier.

Fun fact: the library hosts a book club for their employees!

Another day, another stop on our #tourdelibrary! This time we're taking a look at the library of the Department of the Interior. The library was established in 1850, and continues to serve the staff in D.C. and across the country. This photo is of their main reading room, which recently went through a renovation. Did you know that GPO named this library the 2017 Federal Depository Library of the Year? It was the first Federal agency library to receive the award!

The 4th pick from @sarahjessicaparker
for @bookclubcentral is out today. Anatomy of a Miracle by Jonathan Miles.

Happy reading!

This letter from the American Indian Library Association’s President Naomi Bishop sheds light on the enormous value of libraries serving America’s tribal communities. “At my own library in Northern Arizona we received LSTA grant funding in 2016-2017 to create a Makerlab with 3D printers for the community and students to use. Last fall I taught classes on 3D printing to Navajo elementary and middle school students and they created their own projects using TinkerCad (a software for kids). The students came from a school in a remote area of Arizona, but were able to learn some new skills and make something in the library at this workshop. We also showed teachers how to use the software so the kids could create more projects and send them to Cline Library for printing. LSTA funding provides students of all ages the opportunity to use new technology and create new knowledge. Students from reservation communities use the library for learning and exploring STEM fields. Teachers appreciate the new technology and resources that libraries provide. Librarians are thrilled to see students learning and creating in the library. Tribal communities are thankful for the opportunities that LSTA grant funding provides.” Have you contacted your Rep today? Send a tweet and remind them to #FundLibraries

In addition to keeping copies of U.S. census records, the Census Library also has a collection of census information sent to the U.S. by other countries or related materials. #tourdelibrary

Like many libraries, the space the Census Library has to offer is in high demand. The library often hosts events and training workshops for staff, in addition to providing a space to work or do research. The collection includes digital and physical copies of Census materials (though NARA keeps individual census records), as well as providing access to a ready reference section, databases and other research materials. #tourdelibrary

The #tourdelibrary continues this morning at the U.S. Census Bureau library. Staffed by two full time librarians, the library collects and preserves resources created by Bureau employees, other government agencies, and the public. The library is open to members of the public looking to do research, but it is by appointment only.

The librarians at the CIA are in high demand and it isn’t unusual for them to be recruited by other departments within the CIA. With their training in information collection, management and analysis, librarians play key roles throughout the Agency (and their lanyard style is great, too). #CIALibrarians #tourdelibrary
