Hundreds of people gathered on the University of Virginia campus for a candlelight vigil against hate and violence on Aug. 16, four days after #Charlottesville erupted into street clashes between white supremacists and counterprotesters. Marchers on Wednesday peacefully assembled in the same place where hundreds of torch-carrying white nationalists marched last Friday, the night before the deadly unrest. The group moved slowly through campus before singing and observing a moment of silence for the three deaths on Saturday: a woman who was mowed down by a car that day as she protested and two Virginia state troopers who died in the crash of a helicopter that was monitoring the rally.

Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush released a joint statement on Wednesday condemning “racial bigotry, anti-Semitism and hatred” a day after President Donald Trump suggested white supremacists weren’t entirely to blame for violence in #Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend.⠀
The full statement: “America must always reject racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred in all forms. As we pray for Charlottesville, we are reminded of the fundamental truths recorded by that city’s most prominent citizen in the Declaration of Independence: we are all created equal and endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights. We know these truths to be everlasting because we have seen the decency and greatness of our country.” cc huffpost
