43 years ago today my mom immigrated to the US from Portugal with my sister and me. My dad was already here working as an industrial mechanic. It was super duper cold and she hated it at first. She was 23 years old, didn't understand anyone who spoke to her, had no friends, just a few family members here and two tiny kids. Nevertheless, she persisted.
Eventually, we all went on to become US citizens because we love this country very much. Anyone who has ever met my immigrant mother uses words like "she's an angel," "she's the best," "what a wonderful woman" to describe her. This country is lucky to have her.
