As you all know, yesterday marked the 46th anniversary of the release of Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick". Although I wouldn't quite rank it as my "favorite" prog album (it's certainly high on the list though), this is without question my favorite concept album ever. The idea is that this is all one long poem that a child named "Little Milton" wrote that has been set to music by the band. To reinforce this, the sleeve of the original vinyl edition actually folds out into a 12 page newspaper, complete with horoscopes, classified ads, cartoons, TV listings, banal news stories, the whole backstory behind Little Milton's controversial poem, and even a fake review of the album itself. It's really creative and weird and it looks completely authentic. In parodying the excesses of prog and concept albums like this, Jethro Tull inadvertently made the best concept album ever. Whoops! I think Ian Anderson said that it took them longer to make the newspaper than to write the actual song (speaking of, the music is wonderful). Special thanks to @elkminister for giving me this copy.
