The Shape Of Things, and POP HIEROGLYPHS are new directions in my life long trajectory as an artist. The simple explanation ~ I was simply bored with squares and rectangles. As an artist I wanted to explore more than the classic painting format.
The Shape Of Things and POP HIEROGLYPHS explore my fascination with just that, *the shape of things.
Looking at art, looking at culture, examining the simple and the complex found in art history and seeing the zeitgeist of popular culture my eyes have been drawn to the deconstruction of our communication, language and even emotion down to its bare minimums as seen in the common use now of symbol, icon and emoji. From social media I draw from the common visual thread of the emoji ~ the *thumbs up, the smiley face, the OK symbol and countless others and these I call POP HIEROGLYPHS. From our collective conscious I draw from recognisable symbols, *the Bowler Hat Man, the female form, a handgun, raindrops, stars and anything or any shape in front of me. From our culture and art history I pull shapes directly form old master paintings and contemporary masterpieces, including Marilyn Monroe’s yellow hair from Warhol, Rene Magritte’s Pipe from The Treachery of Images, or the actual shape of David Hockney’s mother from his painting “My Parents” or the any number of beautiful profiles from John Singer Sargent.
The possibilities are endless.
As I write this is occurs to me that I am going back to my earliest functions as an artist, back to my first picking up a crayon or pencil, and seeing a dog, a house, or an apple in front of me and my mind and heart trying to make a connection with my hand, the marker and the paper. Perhaps it is not about deconstructing but rather it might be about re-constructing.
I’ll find out…
