Alaska Avalanche School  One of Alaska's most beloved nonprofits delivering recreational and professional avalanche education for over 42 years.

Rescue ready?! It’s not how much you can stuff in a ship- it’s how much you have stuffed in your brain. Rescue ready is years of training, practice, experience, and mentorship.

Are you searchable? There are lots of ways to find someone buried in snow...
.
The best way is to wear a transceiver (avalanche beacon). Summer is a great time to clean battery connections, check for software updates, and make sure there are no recalls for your model (some Ortovox 3+ had recalls this spring )....
.
Many clothing items and some helmets come with Recco reflectors- small bi-metal chips that make you searchable by professional rescue teams. These are great because there is no on/off switch, battery or operation necessary for the user.
.
Sometimes a Recco detector can find a person by their personal electronics (phone, inReach, etc.) A few years ago a rescue team found a buried climber when the Recco detector pinged his headlamp.
.
Wear bright clothing! If you are a shallow burial or have a limb sticking out- colors that contrast sharply with snow will help people more quickly locate you.
.
📷: Dale Atkins checks the range of the Recco device on an inReach. It was able to find the device at a few meters. A Recco reflector installed in outerwear, boots, and helmets is much more efficient and can be found at over 200 meters.

It’s the weekend!!!!

Multi-tool or iceaxe? What % of the time do you use your whippet for arresting life threatening falls?

The most underestimated force of nature...wind transport.

Some July turns! It’s always snowing somewhere in Alaska- always.

Dale Atkins exams debris from a serac avalanche triggered by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake epicenter Ruth amphitheater on July 1st 2018 at 12:20am. The path containing house sized blocks came within 20 meters of the West Buttress trail and 11,200 camp on Denali.

A foot of snow can weigh anywhere from 3-21 pounds per square foot. A shovel full can tell you a lot- so can a RIP 2 cutter and a spring scale. .
