Rookie was the first place I wrote for aside from my blog, Agent Lover. It was the impetus for my career. I was blessed to be able to write about my absolute favorite thing—costume design in movies (I think i did around 150 movies for that!), had a regular fashion advice column, and wrote so many other favorite things (like being obsessed with goth kids, my fave place ever, The Madonna Inn, and a guide to being horny, lmao). So many of the greatest people in my life are all because of Rookie, and the Rookie readers I met at events and even kept in touch with over the years! Rookie truly made me feel like the Phyllis Nefler I always wanted to be.
Rookie was a very special place that empowered and inspired so many of us to be creative and do work we are proud of. I always say someone needs to do some kind of oral history or documentary on Rookie because the story is so great.
Many years ago, Tavi and I had dinner at a now-defunct pizza place called Mother Dough. I liked how the restaurant always used a tiny part of the original dough in all of its pizzas, hence, Mother Dough. That’s how I feel about Rookie—it’s always in everything I write. I love you, Tavi, and Rookie.
