Wow. At last night's AGDA event Rob Duncan was utterly inspiring, sharing the ideas behind some of Mucho’s most exciting work plus the subtleties of what he has learned about how ideas work differently in different countries because of variations in culture and visual language. He talked about the kind of ’twists’ he likes to put on concepts and the power of using cliches when bent to your advantage. Such a down to earth, humble guy who was so generous with his knowledge, experience and time chatting to people afterwards.
We also had the excellent fortune of having Cathy McAuliffe along as our first ever AGDA Spotlights guest! We got to hear all about where she started her career and how she became the designer and illustrator she is today. Cathy talked about how she developed her creative process, some of the challenges she met as a graduate designer, how her early days in the industry were sometimes tough but truly shaped her professional approach and why hand-created elements are so central to her work.
As an extra special treat, 10 year old Oliver Edwards, who also happens to be Cathy’s son, guest starred in the Spotlight interview to share his incredibly successful ‘Free on a Tree’ campaign - I’m sure you’ve all seen it. The campaign provides a way for all of us to help out people who are currently homeless in Hobart. Rob Duncan was so wowed by Oliver’s idea, that he offered him a job when he gets a bit bigger! I think ‘Free on a Tree’ may soon be going international!
Enormous thanks to Rob Duncan, Cathy McAuliffe, Oliver Edwards and all of you for coming out to be a part of it.
Thanks for having us @parliamentcoworking - it was the perfect venue.
Our next event is coming up in September - 'Ideas and how to have them' with Graham Barton.
