I’ve seen many responses to the explicit ignorance and outright disrespect showed by those that don’t even deserve the @, or the clicks we’ve been giving them. Many outraged. Justifiably so. But rather continue the dialogue with outrage and hurt, I want to share the message that @elainewelteroth and @lenawaithe shared and the one that I’ve held tight to: They want our skin. They want our hair. They want our men. They want our culture. They want our music. They want our art. They want our words. They want our talent. They want it all. But they can’t take it. They can’t take anything from us. Our heritage, our story, our bond is ours. While they’re busy trying to be us, let us continue to be, let us continue to create, let us continue to THRIVE. There’s no stopping us and in moments like these, Michelle Obama always rings through my ears, “When they go low, we go high.” So I’m going high, I’m making a vow that I will continue to do my part, be a beacon of optimism on the darkest days, activate my brothers and sisters around me to lift up those that need, provide resources to those that don’t know where to find them, stand up to those that mean to tear us down. They can’t take anything because we stand together.
