When the Ferrari 288 GTO was launched in 1984 and produced in 273 units through the year 1985, Ansa brought a spectacular sports exhaust for the car to the market, called „megafono“. Due to its look, it also became known as the „trumpet exhaust“ or „Trompetenauspuff“, the latter in the German speaking 288 GTO community. Many examples received this conversion. Spectacular sound!

S/N 52473 has it and is available exclusively via yours truly. Enquire!

The Ferrari 288 GTO s/n 52473 was one of several examples that were sold directly by the Ferrari factory to clients, bypassing the dealer network. This one, the 15th of 273 examples produced, was sold new on March 15, 1985 to Bruno Zambelli, an entrepreneur in the fashion industry resident in San Giovanni in Persiceto, in the Bologna region. In 1987, s/n 52473 changed hands to her second keeper, a Mr. Bartoli, resident on the shores of Lago d‘Iseo. He kept the car through the year 2000 and then sold it to Jean Becquet of Vallauris on the Côte d‘Azur, a collector who bought, sold and traded hundreds of cars within a couple of years. In 2006, this 288 GTO spent one year in German ownership before I brokered her to her current keeper in 2007. After eleven years, I now have the car exclusively on consignment again. Enquire if interested!

Flashback:

In 1963, Ferrari produced three examples of the model 330 LMB, a four-litre competition berlinetta bodied by Medardo Fantuzzi's Carrozzeria Fantuzzi in Modena.

One of these cars was chassis number 4381SA. After having competed for the Scuderia Ferrari in the 12 Hours of Sebring and in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the car was sent back to Carrozzeria Fantuzzi and rebodied as a spectacular spider, while the original berlinetta bodywork was apparently kept in storage at Fantuzzi's bodyshop. The restyled racecar was now painted in a striking shade of metallic gold.

Ferrari then sold the car to the film production company Chronograph Srl. in Rome; unfortunately I don't know who actually owned this company and who effectively ordered and used this special Ferrari.

However, in the 1967 / 1968 making of the portmanteau movie „Histoires Extraordinaires“, s/n 4381SA was starring in the episode „Toby Dammit“, directed by the legendary Federico Fellini!

In the late 1970s, the 330 LMB was rebodied back to its original configuration by Fantuzzi, allegedly using its original bodywork which had been kept aside. The spider bodywork was saved and installed on a crashed 330 GT 2+2 Series II, s/n 8733GT.
However, at some point in the 1960s, the proud Italian owner had driven s/n 4381SA to Monte Carlo and parked it on the Place du Casino, exactly between the Hôtel de Paris and the Casino Monte Carlo. And somebody had luckily taken this photo of the spectacular Ferrari.

Some words in from the organiser Matthias Bartz:

Dear Dino friends,

It is a great pleasure for me to invite you to a unique event: The 50th Ferrari Dino anniversary, which will be celebrated at the Ferrari factory in Maranello on June 30, 2018!
This is the preliminary programme:

On Saturday the 30th of June 2018 we will meet at the Fiorano track in the late morning to do a few laps on Ferrari’s famous private racetrack. After that, you will drive your Dino to the factory where we will have together a special guided tour through the production halls. Following the tour, we will have lunch with the Ferrari workers in the factory canteen. We will depart via the old factory gate where we have arranged a professional photo shoot of you and your car! The factory day will start at 10 AM at the Fiorano racetrack and will end approx. at 4 PM with departing through the old factory gate.
The event is limited to 206 Ferrari Dino and places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Costs:

The cost of the factory day per person is 300 €. A maximum of two persons per Ferrari Dino is allowed, a participation is possible only in a Ferrari Dino 206 GT, 246 GT/GTS or 208/308 GT4! There will be no extra fee for the car.

I hope to see you all in Maranello!

Warmest regards,

Matthias Bartz

The Varese registered black Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina s/n 20071 was only two or so years old when this photo was taken at the Place du Casino in Monte Carlo, but had obviously already suffered a crash in the tail: Both the tail lights and the rear bumper had been replaced and were no longer correct for a Vetroresina example (originally had the backup lights in the bumper and the tail lights did not have integrated backup lights). When this photo was taken, the car had just been banged again, this time in the left front (not visible in this photo). Monte Carlo, 1977 or 1978.

When this photo was taken in 1978 in Monaco's borough of La Condamine, near the authorized Ferrari dealer Monaco Motors, this unidentified Ferrari 308 GTS was almost new, but had already received a pair of interesting aftermarket fog lights!

The registration plate from the French département Alpes-Maritimes is very similar to the one of the yellow 308 GTS which I published on my IG two days ago. The letters „TG“ identify the car as an early 1978 delivery, making it a very early example of the 308's targa-top variant.

Ferrari is a very small manufacturer compared to the key players of the automotive industry, but although I already spent most of my professional life researching the marque's history and the individual histories of Ferrari automobiles by serial number, I still keep learning every day!

I already knew that the German regulations made it mandatory since the 1980s to cover the vent openings on 308 QVs, 288 GTOs and 328s with some sort of wire mesh made of plastic.

But yesterday I learned (through photos from my archive) that even German-delivered 308 GTB Vetroresina examples already needed this feature in the 1970s! Pictured is s/n 19813, a one owner from new Vetroresina that was „discovered“ as a barn find with 11.000 original kilometres. Note the mesh wire in the vent opening!

Thanks to my friend Piero Poli of @undicihp who discovered the screw holes for the wire mesh inserts on s/n 19609 (another German-delivered Vetroresina) yesterday and thus pointed me to this detail!

When this photo was taken in 1978 in front of the Loews Hotel in Monte Carlo, this unidentified Ferrari 308 GTS in „Giallo Fly“ was brand new, but already looked rather battered somehow.

The registration plate from the French département Alpes-Maritimes identifies the car as an early 1978 delivery, so... probably one of the first 308 GTS examples. The sticker in the rear windows is of Garage Méditerranée, then the authorized Ferrari dealer in Nice. Maybe this 308 GTS was their demonstrator?

Gooding & Co. just sold Battista „Pinin“ Farina's personal Ferrari 275 GTB Berlinetta Speciale Pininfarina s/n 06437 for 8.085.000 $ (ca. 6.610.000 €) including commission!

New world record for a steel bodied 275 GTB/2 and a higher price than I had expected. The estimate had been very enthusiastic, though.

S/N 06437 is the only 275 GTB bodied by Pininfarina instead of Scaglietti and has many unique features.

My personal dream-Ferrari is the 250 GT California Spider SWB Competizione s/n 2383GT because it's the ultimate version of the 250 GT California Spider and since it's an example that was sold new in Germany.

In April of 1961, the German importer of the time, Auto Becker in Düsseldorf, sold s/n 2383GT to the proud new owner, Ernst Lautenschlager of Stuttgart. Lautenschlager owned a well established facility management company and a nightclub.

Being a gentleman racer, Lautenschlager took his California Spider to the famous Eberbach hillclimb in Germany in the same month. One year later, he returned to the hillclimb event on April 15, 1962. An unidentified photographer did this shot which unfortunately „cut off“ a part of the car, but reveals some details very clearly.

In the mid-1960s, the Ferrari 500 Superfast was one of the most expensive production cars in the world, if not the most expensive one. Several of these 37 handbuilt five-litre twelve cylinder machines were sold to celebrities, kings and tycoons. Jack S. Durlacher, co-founder of the renowned London stock broker company Wedd Durlacher Mordaunt & Co., ordered one of these automobiles in RHD configuration via the official British importer Maranello Concessionaires Ltd.
When his blue 500 Superfast (s/n 6661SF) had arrived in 1965, Mr. Durlacher was not amused, neither by the quality of the car's paint in Blu Italver 19343, nor by the various mechanical faults that occurred right from the beginning. Thus he urged Maranello Concessionaires to take the car back and to supply another 500 Superfast.

Mr. Durlacher's second 500 Superfast arrived in March of 1966 and thus was already one of the slightly refined Series II examples, bearing serial number 8459SF. The car sported a different shade of blue, Blu Chiaro Italver 20295A, but the same shade of beige (VM3309) for the Connolly leather interior.

I recently found this photo at an auction, taken by an unidentified photographer at Silverstone in April of 1967. Between 1966 and 1969, Jack S. Durlacher served as a financier for Rob Walker's famous racing team, which during this period was named „Rob Walker / Jack Durlacher Racing“ accordingly. I bet Mr. Durlacher had just driven s/n 8459SF to some test day at the famous British track from his home in Kent.
