@thequeenmary in Long Beach might someday serve as the centerpiece of "Queen Mary Island," a proposed $250-million entertainment complex. Queen Mary Island would be an all-inclusive entertainment destination built on the 65 acres of waterfront land surrounding its namesake ship docked in Long Beach. The complex would include a 150,000-square-foot facility offering activities such as indoor ice climbing, surfing and zip lining. Plans were officially submitted on Wednesday to city leaders, who hope re-imagining the historic tourist attraction will provide a boost to its revenue stream and make it more economically viable going forward. The project still needs approval from the city and the California Coastal Commission. Photos: Urban Commons

Watch Monday's solar eclipse with friends at the @griffithobservatory! They are holding a public viewing event on their front lawn 9am-noon on Monday. You can enjoy the Observatory's historic coelostat (solar telescope) in the Hall of the Sky, pick up an eclipse viewer at the Stellar Emporium gift shop and grab a bite at the Café at the End of the Universe. Officials are expecting very large crowds, and they say to expect traffic congestion and long walks from parking. They suggest taking the DASH Observatory Bus (special service starting at 8am) from the Vermont/Sunset Metro Red Line station. More info at the link in their profile. They emphasize that you should not look at the sun without proper eye protection. Thanks to Eyewitness @samsrhee for this great shot. Share your eclipse adventures with #abc7eyewitness!
