Abbie 🇬🇧  I like tea & secondhand books. GR: 95/120📚 CR: The Little Stranger - Sarah Waters NRB Rep: NOCTURNALABBIE15 👻 Save 10% at WBC!⬇️

Good morning! Just one more busy day and then the weekend! I feel like this week has simultaneously sped by and dragged, just as I feel like I got a lot of work done but still have tonnes to do 😂 WHY.
.
For my new read I decided to pick up another Sarah Waters! I read my first one, Fingersmith, a couple of months back and I loved it! The Little Stranger is proving to be a slow starter but I got to a point last night where I think things are going to start picking up!
.
Are you a Sarah Waters fan? Which one is your favourite? ☺️

The finale to the Tawny Man trilogy ended up leading to some of the most conflicting thoughts and feelings I’ve had about a Hobb book so far... I struggled between being happy to see characters happy and annoyed at how they achieved this happiness. Vague statement is vague, but necessary 😅
.
I also struggled with the beginning of the book, part of which was definitely down to me reading it during a very busy few days, but there is also only a certain number of times I can read about Thick complaining of his sea sickness and the group trudging through snow before I start getting a little antsy for some more development 🙊 However, once they did reach their destination the ensuing 400 pages did not disappoint, I loved the action and the heartbreak 👏
.
As usual Hobb does not disappoint with her characterisation, both development of old characters and the introduction of new ones! I enjoyed Dutiful’s arc, Thick was pure as ever and delivered some lines that had me tearing up, I loved Nettle’s sass, and I was beyond happy at the return of Patience! ❤️ As for Fitz and the Fool... they’re as frustrating and wonderful (in that order) as ever.
.
Another thing I really enjoyed, although it was fairly minor, was the exploration of the Out Islands, as Hobb creates a matriarchal society that was vastly interesting! I’d love more books that explored that further.
.
Despite my frustration at the ending, I couldn’t help but find the epilogue very sweet regardless... I can’t say anymore but if you’ve read it be sure to check out @hobbsquad’s discussion post later in the month so we can all talk about the details 😉
.

The inevitable post to show off my newest favourite bookmark that I bought from @thepenguinco 😍 This one is ‘English Rose’ and immediately caught my eye because I love florals, but they have so many gorgeous designs I’ll definitely be going back for more! ❤️
.
After tearfully finishing Tin Man last night 😪 I’m now reading Idaho by Emily Ruskovich! I think I was similarly attracted to the florals of the cover as I was with this bookmark. It’s a rather fragmented story of a woman who is trying to piece together the horrific past of her new husband, who has early onset dementia. It’s a sad story set in the lonely mountains of Idaho and I’m rather enjoying it!
.
In other news, it’s crazy how much work you can get done if you lock your phone in another room for 3 hours... 😂 I’m trying to limit my Instagram check ins to just a couple a day, as it’s astonishing how much time I can waste on this app not even scrolling or replying to comments, just mindlessly refreshing 👀 No longer!

Good morning! Continuing my #abreadscolourstacks series in no particular order, with white for Wednesday! 😀 I think it was nice to include little round ups of the books in the stack, as a way of revisiting books I read in previous years since my account these days is very much about what I’m reading here and now!
.
The First Person and Other Stories (4 ⭐️), Beloved (4.5 ⭐️), Station Eleven (5 ⭐️), Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (4.5 ⭐️), Dolores Claiborne (5 ⭐️), Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay (5 ⭐️), Under the Udala Trees (4 ⭐️), The Fishermen (5 ⭐️)
.
You’ll find that with these stacks the ratings for ones I’ve read will all be 3 or above (mostly above), because I donate books I didn’t enjoy back to the charity shops 😉 (Unless they belong to an author collection - my methods make sense to me okay)

Thanks to @penguinpress for gifting an advanced copy of My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh to review! It came out last week and you might have seen in my stories, I recommend this one to anyone who loves darkly comic stories about fucked up people making terrible decisions 🙊
.
Fans of Moshfegh’s previous novel Eileen will be delighted with this one, I think! I loved that one until the ending, and My Year of Rest and Relaxation has a MUCH stronger ending, but has the same hypnotic prose that keeps you turning the pages like no tomorrow.
.
If you’re looking for a book with likeable characters then look elsewhere, but if you love hating on characters then you’ll have a field day here: the unnamed narrator is unlikeable herself (but you sort of grow a bit affectionate towards her), but she is surrounded by vapid, selfish, stuck up, pretentious rich people, fuelling her desire to shut herself away for a year to sleep...
.
There isn’t much in the way of plot, but as a fan of character-driven stories I couldn’t get enough of the introspective narrative that takes a twisted look at mental illness, toxic relationships, and in depth study of one, seemingly perfect, woman’s precarious existence.

Good morning! After reading two books that numbered at 1684 pages between them in the first half of July, I’ve been in the mood for some shorties! Do you do that as well, balance your chunky reads with skinny ones, or are you always about that big book life? 🤓
.
After finishing Vox (a very compelling read!) last night, I’ll be starting Tin Man by Sarah Winman today! Unfortunately I have to do quite a bit of uni work today before I can settle in to read, but it’ll be something to look forward to! ☺️
.
In other news we had some EPIC rain and thunder and lightening last night! Desperately needed and so cosy to sit and read in it 🌧⚡️

Many thanks to @berkleypub for gifting me this advanced copy of Vox by Christina Dalcher #VoxBook as well as these badass badges ❤️ It’s being hailed as a must read for fans of books such as the Handmaid’s Tale and Red Clocks (still on my TBR) so I’m excited to see how it plays out! It’s marketed as feminist dystopian, which is true, but I’ve seen reviews saying that it’s more like a thriller, so I’m reading with an open mind so as not to be disappointed 😉
.
Vox is set in a version of the US where women have been effectively silenced, only being allowed 100 words a day, and explores the lengths a mother will go to to protect her daughter. So far it’s very good and making me VERY angry 😂 It’s disturbing 👀

There is no denying that King weaves some of his best tales when he sets about writing an epic - The Stand, Needful Things, IT, The Talisman... all are huge and all are in or around my top ten Kings! Under the Dome didn’t quite make it as a five star read in my eyes, but I felt the same attachment to the characters and immersion in this epic story!
.
I’ll lay it out first that the reason I deducted a star was that the amount of violence simply got a bit tiring; there wasn’t the same sense of community building as in the Stand or the artful manipulation of chaos as in Needful Things, so it got to the point where every time Junior or Thibodeau’s name was mentioned I was like WHAT NOW FFS 😂
.
But there were lots of things I did enjoy! The whole concept of what would happen if a town was isolated from the entire world by an inexplicable dome and suddenly recognised no law but it’s own. The effect this brings out in its inhabitants, for better or worse (mostly worse). I enjoyed the cast of characters, as usual King creates characters you’d like nothing better than to punch in the face and characters that you can’t help root for.
.
I love seeing King’s development in his later works. You must admit that a few of his books from the 70s and 80s leave a lot to be desired in terms of solid women characters, but in this novel I think they shine. Julia, Rose, Norrie, Andi, poor Sammy, Linda, Jackie, I rooted for them all and they represented most of what was good about Chester’s Mill after the dome comes down.
.
ALSO, shout out to some of the best doggo characters the world has ever seen: Horace, Audrey and Clover 💕

Good morning! What are you all currently reading this Saturday? 😌
.
I’ve got the last 30 pages of Fool’s Fate to finish off this morning, and then I’m diving into The Moor by @sam_haysom - thank you for gifting me a copy to review! It’s a horror novel that features teenagers on a camping trip when suddenly things start to get spooky... 👀

If you’re going to read only one recent contemporary novel then you have to make it The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas - utterly heartbreaking, compelling, and one of the most important and relevant books out there today!
.
If you weren’t aware, which I’m sure you are, THUG tackles the devastatingly real problem of unarmed black people, kids, killed by police. Thomas takes a heavy topic and gives it accessibility without taking away from the seriousness. If you feel under-informed about the Black Lives Matter movement then this is one of the books for you.
.
As well as the A+ handling of social justice issues, THUG is a genuine pleasure to read as a story. Starr’s narrative voice is fresh and funny, and Thomas depicts her grief and anger with an accuracy that raises goosebumps and brings tears to your eyes. It goes without saying that young people are the future and if people followed Starr’s example of being brave and standing up for what’s right even when you’re terrified, then the world would become a much better place. There’s also a great supporting cast of characters, who add further depth to the story as well as other issues.
.
If I only had one teeny tiny complaint it’s that I don’t gravitate towards contemporaries because constant reference to things like social media really throw me off for some reason. But obviously here, social media sites, like Tumblr and Twitter, play such a huge role in the BLM movement, and in our daily lives in general, that it’s impossible not to include them!
.
Bottom line is, read THUG, and then buy a copy for someone else to read too. Everyone needs this one.

Good morning! I’m still on reading Fool’s Fate by Hobb, I’ve been having an unusually busy week and have had little time for reading every day! But the last couple of days I’ve had some nice chunks of time to read, yay 😌
.
So Hobb’s books contain the Wit magic, where people can bond with an animal and have an animal bud for life! (Vastly simplified that there 😂) And my question for you today is which animal would you like to have as a companion? Contrary to what my photo suggests, mine would NOT be a swan, although tbf they would be good if you ever got into a fight because they are TERRIFYING 😱 A lot of Hobb’s Witted characters are bonded with forest and farmyard animals, but how fucking cool would it be to be bonded with like a jaguar or something 😏 I think I’d like a dog or a wolf companion though!
.
Hope everyone has a great Friday! I’m off tomorrow so I’m super excited to finish work today 💃
