Today is World Mental Health Day. I didn’t even know that was a thing, but man am I glad it is. I read somewhere recently that suicide now kills more people than car accidents, making it the leading cause of injury death.
I’m a big advocate for mental health awareness. I went to school to be a counselor. I know the power of behavioral therapy and using counseling as a way to learn skills to better yourself as a human. While there’s so much more to mental health than just counseling, I do believe it is a key player in improving mental health issues for so many reasons. There’s a stigma around counseling, but rest assure I’m a BIG cheerleader for anyone who thinks it might be the best route for them.
We don’t often talk about our mental struggles, our personal issues, or weaknesses on social media or in real life for that matter. Certainly not the way we should. And yet for some reason I always feel called to share that side of my reality. Throughout my instagram you will see this “bleh” beige wall.... what is this wall you ask? It’s outside my counselors office. Once a week I stroll into his office and “hash it out”, for lack of a better way to describe it. Most of the time it’s me and Kevin together. (Y’all marriage is hard, especially 9+ years in, don’t let anyone tell you differently). But yah, most of the time with Kevin and sometimes alone. It’s a safe place to be heard, to be validated, and to grow as a person (and as a couple). There’s no shame in outsourcing help for whatever you’re dealing with. In fact, you’ll probably start looking forward to going. Stress, anxiety, trauma, self esteem, depression, marital issues, whatever it be, let me repeat myself.... there is no shame. Your priority should be focusing on becoming the healthiest version of yourself. It can be scary to take that step, but I promise you it’s worth it. Here’s to more mental health programs! To more awareness and to breaking the stigma! 👊🏻
