Designers should have an in-depth understanding of the mechanics and movements of change and link the methods and hard skills they need to use appropriate to a challenge set before as opposed to using cookie-cutter out-of-the-box methods.
.
.
As a critical practice of design the currency of what a “designer” deals in — is in essence about ‘change.’ However, what is not acknowledged or taught of enough is how to identify, explore and if necessary challenge the assumptions that underlie how we perceive change and the decisions we make because of it.

This is the ‘Emyrs Cycle of Change’ which is conceptual process model I have been working on for some time. I’ve been using as a way to help try and teach how to ‘design for change’ whether you instigate it or react to a changing conditions.
.
.
The ‘Emyrs Cycle of Change’ (ECC) shows what forces influence change, outlining the consciousness and movements of those changes, the modalities those changes can go through and the types of change that will determine the magnitude of change that occurs. Through it we can begin to identify all the elements of the ‘change’ paradigm and how it affects the system of progress by influencing the other constituent elements, particles and forces that create, shape and model it.
.
.
It was executed to sit alongside #nerioxman appropriation of citric acid cycle that was adapted to show the dissection of creative intelligence titled the #krebbscycle of creativity.
.
.
The idea is if we build upon these concepts eventually we’ll have much more knowledge and wisdom surrounding how we adapt and create impactful solutions that enrich our lives.

As my practice centres around design-led change, #impact and #transformation it’s somewhat become a big area of study to try and uncover the forces of change. So that one day we can teach designers how to understand and be aware of the mechanisms of change as they come up with solutions and provide recommendations.
.
.
As I was building my designing for change model I started by looking at the forces that influenced any changing conditions which was outlined best by #futurist #cecilysommers .
.
To appreciate how these forces of change shape society is to accept and understand that they occur in a fairly predictable manner, however it’s the outcomes that we can never predict!

Resources: comprise of materials that nature offers.
Technology: comprises of the tools that gives us the capacity to improve.
Demographics: is about the assets of groups of people
Governance: is about how we administer, distribute and manage the assets, resources and technology through the rules we are beholden too.

The funny thing about #cocreation is that the assumption is that you’re always designing with a massive team - which as it turns out - isn’t always the best thing to do.
.
.
Orchestrating #innovative behaviours in people and facilitating the process is what designers really need to do in this case and is often a skill I find lacking in many designers.
.
.
Here I’ve broken the wider team into pairs to #ideate as opposed to trying to conduct a massive group think scenario

Being inspired by an old mood spectrum diagram, I used it to create the 'Spectrum of Design' so to have a visual sensemaking tool which I could use to summarise a macro viewpoint, something quick to grasp as a conversation starter about the current state of design.
.
.
The two poles I used were differentiated firstly by technology; human-centered (HCD) on one end (the left) and post-human (PHD) on the other (the right.) The HCD side I saw as focusing on the extracting and crafting structure whereby using the experience to help shape intuition. Whereas on the other hand, we have a ‘post-human’ design (PHD) approach, that will eventually teach intelligent machine systems to create the hierarchies and compositions of human behaviour.

Last year I was kicking around an idea about how to explain the diversity of skills within the #design industry and how they connected. What I came up with was the ‘Spectrum of design.’
.
.
The ‘Spectrum of Design', integrates all design; approaches, methods, disciplines into a coherent whole. This holistic thinking describes the multifaceted and interconnected capabilities that go beyond the surface level and suitcase term of one type of design over another. .
.
By looking at design and approaching it as an applied spectrum meant I was able to overlay the entire disciplinary field of design categorically and in a way that showed the whole system of approaches on a continuum, along with which every "designer" can sit.
.
.
My thinking was that if we re-frame design as a ‘spectrum’ we can find a deeper understanding and appreciation of all design, designers capabilities and skill-sets and the overall creative intelligence one can imbue.

The definable field of #design (as a spectrum) is one that is pluralistic, unified, and diverse. It encompasses thinking approaches; frameworks, methods, processes (geared towards decision-making) and of course disciplines (craftsmanship).

Taking an inclusive design approach means you build something, create something and test something in conjunction with a wider team than you might of traditionally.
.
.
It also means you’re constantly getting feedback the whole way along which can do wonders for the development of a solution.
.
.
Personally I just like to listen to the very honest, raw and funny visceral responses customers or users have.
