THANK YOU for speaking such beautiful truths @rhitrition 👌 I wholeheartedly believe every single word here people! 👉
🤷🏼♀Think Going Gluten-Free is Healthier?
🏪With supermarkets and restaurants promoting GF options more than ever before, I feel the need to remind you that Celiac Disease affects less than 1% of us according to the NHS.
🤦🏼♀Honestly, going GF is irresponsible unless medically diagnosed.
😳Yet, the “wheat is poison” narrative and lure of supposed weight-loss is powerful, so much so that I see in clinic going GF often hides disordered eating patterns in plain sight.
👋🏻The result of supposed GF weight loss may be owed to strict rules around eating as any rules often achieve weight loss - and that does not mean gluten causes weight gain!
👎🏻The demonising of perfectly sensible foods can seriously damage our mental and physical health something only the next generation will truly understand as so many of these modern day diets are untried over long periods.
🤓But we do know GF diets may be higher in saturated fat and trans fatty acids, and lower in essential micronutrients such as vitamin B12, folate, zinc, iron, magnesium and calcium, with worryingly low fibre intakes - so not exactly the health remedy that those embarking upon it imagines!
🍭Some GF foods may be tasteless without the higher levels of sugar and salt often used to make them palatable. Remember, GF junk food is still junk food!
😤More concerning is that at least 90% of the 1% estimated to have coeliac disease are thought to be medically undiagnosed - so they're following social media's unregulated advised bandwagon!
👍🏻The key to a good diet is not the avoidance of a single ingredient. It’s about developing a better relationship with food, celebrating the wide variety of options available, and not attaching morals to our choices.
👍🏻So, please don’t listen to self-appointed health gurus whose nutritional qualification doesn't go beyond an ability to eat!
🚨But, if you’re regularly suffering from gut symptoms e.g abdominal pain, bloating or diarrhoea, you should consult a doctor for medical advice. It’s likely to be nothing with eating gluten!
