The Unbound Project  Profiling women on the front lines of animal advocacy around the world. A project by @weanimals.

“Most people tend to be ignorant of the processes by which food reaches their table, or if not ignorant they find it more comfortable to forget." This #ThrowbackThursday the Unbound Project is celebrating the game-changing investigative work of Ruth Harrison (1920-2000). Harrison's groundbreaking and meticulously researched book Animal Machines: The New Factory Farming System led the British government to order an investigation into factory farming practices, and inspired major improvements in animal welfare.

The photographs in Animal Machines played a powerful role in challenging the marketing of meat, eggs and dairy, which showed sanitized images of 'traditional' farms where animals frolicked in meadows.

Maggie Kuhn (1905 – 1995) was an American activist known for founding the Gray Panthers movement, after she was forced to retire from her job at the then-mandatory retirement age of 65. The Gray Panthers became known for advocating nursing home reform and fighting ageism.

Activism is a vital force in all social justice movements. Speaking up against what you know to be wrong can be difficult, but it is one of the most powerful things we can do as individuals.

"Animal welfare science has provided us with enough evidence to justify behavioural change. One of the reasons we don’t change our behaviour in the light of evidence is the overwhelming force of habit. It’s a constant, daily battle."

We could not be more proud or excited that Jo is nominated for the @rps100heroines, a project celebrating the world-changing work of women in photography!

The @unboundproject also celebrates the world-changing work of women - those changing the way we see and treat animals.

This is a photo of Yenzekile Mathebula and Leitah Mkhabela, two of the women in the @blackmambasapu. The Black Mambas now number over 30 rangers, most of whom are female, who undertake intensive training and dangerous patrols in order to disarm poachers and keep South Africa's threatened rhino population safe.

This #ThrowbackThursday we're celebrating Ada Cole, a pioneering figure in the fight to change the world for animals over 100 years ago!
Cole did not set out to be an activist - she was an ordinary citizen who, when confronted with the cruelty of the live horse export industry, took matters in to her own hands. Cole used photography and film to document what she saw and hoped that the resulting images would get others to join her campaign against these cruel practices.

Today we revisit the story of the very first woman celebrated by the Unbound Project, Ledaiki Ann Nailateni.
.
Nailateni is one of only a few Maasai women working with the @kenyawildlifeservice to protect the wildlife of Kenya from poaching.
.
Read what Nailateni has to say about the role of women in the conservation movement in Africa, the importance of education, and what it's like to share a hideout with a warthog! Link in bio.

"I just received my copy of @jenniferskiff's new book, Rescuing Ladybugs. I’m one of the people featured in it, and so incredibly honored to be! The book interviews animal warriors from around the world, including some of my personal heroes, Peter Singer and Jill Robinson, and a host of other folks I haven't heard of but am very happy to be getting to know within these pages. I'm so enjoying each inspiring chapter." – Jo
