On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War my thoughts are of my great-grandfather Edmond Laureys who was a Lt. Colonel during the war in the Belgian Army. Although outmatched by the size and power of the German Army, tiny Belgium managed to defend a small corner of its territory for the duration of WWI. Between the two wars, Edmond proudly wore his dress uniform and medals to formal events like my grandmother’s wedding. When WWII arrived, the German Army managed to occupy the whole country, and Nazi soldiers were posted inside our family home. I'll be giving an artist talk about this “Divided” video installation and how I use philosophy, image making and investigative journalism to upend our perceptions of the #border on ‪Saturday, Oct 20, 1:00 in the Lamy Room at the Drury Plaza Hotel in ‬Santa Fe, NM, as part of #reviewsantafe . The talk is open to the public, but space is limited. The video is the winner of @centersantafe ‘s 2018 Producer’s Choice Award, and is one of three works about the Mexico-U.S. border that I’ll be presenting. The others are “Lines and Lineage” and “Implied Lines.”

Glass 4x5" collodion negative in the fixer tray of an adobe house built in 1840 by Rafael Gonzales, when the pueblo of Monterey was the capital of Alta California under Mexican rule. Today, it's called the Stevenson House because Scottish author Robert Luis Stevenson stayed here in 1879. #linesandlineage @pulitzercenter #history #wetplate #collodion

Divided, my latest video installation has won First Place, Producer’s Choice Award from @centersantafe Video link:
Juror’s Statement: “This work took a very simple concept, a border wall between two countries, and visually infused it with all the complexities of the contemporary American debate. The ‘moving picture’ that tells this story, does so in a leisurely way, but clearly one that was thought out and executed with the utmost care and attention to detail. The ‘reveal’, at the end, lingers in your mind. This piece is not overly ambitious, but the artist’s ambition is right-sized to the storytelling and to the ability to tell it with a level of perfection that makes the story of Alta and Baja all the more relevant and impactful to the viewer.” — Keith Jenkins (@keithwj), Director of Visual Journalism, NPR
Artist Statement:
Since Baja and Alta California were divided by the seizure of Mexican land by the United States military in 1848, a political boundary has jutted into the Pacific Ocean. Over the years, the border has been reinforced from an imaginary line to a fence to steel barrier. This single-channel video installation focuses on the timeless repetition of lines of waves as they crash perpendicular into the barrier. The collision of waves is mesmerizing, and we notice unified lines of waves that are divided in two.

Join me in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area this week as I present "Lines and Lineage," my Fellowship project on the forgotten history of the Far West before it was seized by the U.S. in 1848. Who were the early inhabitants of the West? What did the original border landscapes look like?

I'm scheduled to speak at 10:40am at this all-day event on challenging official histories with photography.
