Photo by @TimLaman. The Hunt. Recently while in the Serengeti in Tanzania, I had the amazing opportunity to witness a coordinated lion hunt by five lionesses. It was a textbook operation. The lion you see here was moving slowly straight up the middle toward the unsuspecting wildebeest herd in the background. One female was further out to the left, and three others were spread out to the right. With just an occasional glance toward each other to check position, they moved steadily toward the herd, keeping their heads just below grass height, and flanking them on both sides in a precise military-like operation. When the wildebeest finally panicked and bolted (I think it was when they saw two lion cubs way in the back who climbed up on a termite mound eager to see what was going on) a female on the left had an easy time bringing one down. Photo by @TimLaman. A classic Serengeti scene – the savanna landscape with Acacia trees, water holes, and elephants. Can’t beat spending some time in this amazing place. #serengeti, #Tanzania, #Africa @thephotosociety @natgeocreative

Photo by @TimLaman. As a baby elephant lags behind its mother who is out of frame, another old female, probably an “aunt” keeps an eye on him. #Tarangire National Park, #Tanzania. @thephotosociety, @natgeocreative.

Photo by @TimLaman. On my recent Tanzania trip, one of the highlights was seeing this massive African Crowned Eagle fly in to deliver what appears to be a leg of a duiker to its young. The Crowned Eagle is considered to be Africa’s most powerful eagle and has exceptionally strong legs and talons. In this shot the adult just landed on a branch with the food in its talons. An Eagle that can take down a small deer – now that’s impressive. Shot in Arusha National Park, #Tanzania, #Africa, @thephotosociety @natgeocreative, #Eagle, #AfricanCrownedEagle.

Photo by @TimLaman. A lioness greets a male from her pride as he rests on a mudflat in the Serengeti on my recent trip there. Amazing to see these massive cats in the wild. Their strength and power is so impressive up close…. we must preserve the big wild cats! #Serengeti, #Tanzania, #Africa, #Lion, @thephotosociety @natgeocreative.

Photo by @TimLaman. Baby elephants are well protected by their mothers and the whole herd, but somehow never get trampled though they are often among many big legs. Elephants are huge, but not clumsy! Shot two weeks ago in the Serengeti. #elephant, #serengeti, #Tanzania, #Africa @thephotosociety @natgeocreative

Photo by @TimLaman from my #windowseat today en route from Chicago to Hong Kong over the N Pacific. A spectacular uninhabited volcanic island. Anybody recognize this island? Maybe in the Aleutians? On my way to Thailand looking for hornbills again. Stay tuned. #volcano #island

Photo by @TimLaman. A study in stripes. I know you have been wondering… are Zebras white with black stripes, or black with white stripes. Turns out it is the later if you base it on their skin color. If you look at their skin color underneath the hair, it is all black. But why do they have stripes anyway? There are about five different theories, but the currently most popular ones have to do with cooling the skin by creating eddies, and repelling biting flies that don’t seem to like landing on striped surfaces. Shot on my recent Tanzania trip. #Zebra, #Tanzania, #Africa, @thephotosociety, @natgeocreative.

Photo by @TimLaman. A pair of Fischer’s Lovebirds showed us how they got their name…. We saw them do at least ten minutes of snuggling and cuddling, which appeared to be part of the pair bonding process in this species that is known to mate for life. #lovebird #love #Tanzania #Africa @thephotosociety @natgeocreative

Photo by @TimLaman. I got to play @SteveWinterPhoto for a day, and pretend I was a big cat photographer, as we staked out this leopard and waited for it to come down from his tree at dusk. I was lucky to get one quick glance from him. Such a beautiful animal, and super exciting to see him. I can understand Steve’s obsession with the big cats, and please support efforts to conserve these magnificent animals. Photo by @TimLaman. Flamingos along a lakeshore in Arusha National Park, Tanzania on a rainy day. I wanted to share a few more photos from my recent #Tanzania trip with @HopeCollege alumni group. These are mostly Lesser Flamingos, but note a few Greater Flamingos with the lighter plumage and pink on their beaks. #flamingo, #Africa, @thephotosociety, @natgeocreative.

My orangutan photos are on exhibit on banners in the parks of Telluride, Colorado as part of the Mountainfilm Festival. Thanks Mountainfilm! It's been a great festival. #telluride #orangutan
