#TearAwayWalls "After the attack on Pulse, @TheVenueOrlando became a Donation Hub for Orlando. Volunteers were working around the clock to help us sort out all of the water/food/necessities that were coming in faster than we could keep up. We put together "ONE LOVE boxes" consisting of immediate necessities for Pulse Staff, Survivors and Families. On Day 2 we organized fundraisers at @thehammeredlamb and @SouthernNightsOrlando . We were grateful to be able to give back to our community and be able to collaborate with such caring organizations and people.
One moment that stands out was my CNN interview with Brook Baldwin. They drove me to Orange Avenue 3 blocks from Pulse. It was eerie and full of News trucks. I stood there, staring at the sign, staring at the place that was my home for years. I remember feeling empty and helpless. The interview began and about 9 minutes in, Brook mentioned that it was going to be Latin Night that night at @PHouseOrlando . I remember pausing and thinking about the hugs that would be missed that night, the smiles you wouldn't see, the dances that wouldn't be danced, it was daunting and I started to tear up, Brook did as well and gave me a much needed hug all live on air. We were a wounded city, but I made up my mind at that moment that we show the World exactly what ORLANDO STRONG was." -Blue Star
The creators of the project, as allies and members of the queer community, were in shock that a space of refuge where people could finally be themselves around like-minded spirits and supportive friends was attacked. With @TearAwayWalls we wanted to not only hear the stories that are being told by people associated with the tragedy, but also capture and convey what remnant energy may still be attached to them personally. We hope this project inspires love and support to the community of Orlando.
