“People seem to think they can always identify LGBTQ people, and it erases anyone who doesn't fit whatever mental image they have. I do sometimes feel as if I have to fight to justify my identity because I don't always fit an obvious stereotype. I hope tomorrow’s generation knows they don’t need to fit a label or stereotype. You don’t have to have everything figured out about your identity all at once. At the end of the day, what's most important is that you allow yourself the room to evolve and grow. We keep learning more and more about how we are for all of our lives, and labels are only as useful as the self-awareness that they can bring you.“ -Alisa, 27, Tech Recruitment Manager at @RentTheRunway NYC

“Once in an interview with GQ, Tom Ford was asked if he ever felt like a freak growing up. He responded with, ‘I thought I was fabulous and everyone else was stupid.’ I have always identified with this.” - Neil, 30, Style Specialist at @RentTheRunway NYC #Pride2017 #PrideNYC

“It took me years to detach myself from the idea of what a lesbian should look like and start wearing feminine clothes like I wanted to. That being said, there was a time when my appearance was more masculine and even my hair was short. In my teens my tomboyishness led me to a baggy wardrobe because I didn't fit the heteronormative mold and had my clothes signal it on my behalf. These days I know that my identity isn’t determined by the clothes I choose to put on in the morning.” -Anna, 28, Software Engineer Intern at @RentTheRunway

“When I first came out, I was working in fashion. It was really stressful trying to understand how my newfound sexual identity was going to be expressed outwardly. I remember making a Pinterest board at one point of what I thought I was supposed to look like. I wanted people to know I was gay simply by looking at me, but at the same time I wasn't willing to give up my femininity or my beauty regimen. Instead of heading down the rabbit hole of stereotypes and labels, I embraced creating a uniform that made me feel curated, strong and free. No rules on how femme or androgynous or masculine that look should be. I dress to express my style, not my sexuality.” -Cat, 28, Art Direction at @RentTheRunway NYC
